Chapter Four
Varya
The yacht dramatically changing direction is what wakes me up in the morning. It isn’t an easy wakeup call and it something I wish didn’t happen.
“What?” I mumble under my breath and push the blanket off of my body.
My cheek still hurts from Sergei’s slap. The heat of the slap has eased a little but what is left, is a dull burn of humiliation.
I check Sergei’s side of the bed. When I see the blankets are still pulled up around the pillow, I wish I could say I’m surprised he didn’t come to bed. It wouldn’t be the first time he slapped me and didn’t come to bed.
There is something going on with his organization which is stressing him out so much. I wish I knew what it was. However, judging by how he is treating me, I doubt he wants me to know about it.
The door to the bedroom cabin opens and slams shut just as quickly as it opens. Quickly, I grab the blanket off the bed and wrap it around myself.
“Who were you talking to?” Sergei demands again.
I shake my head. “I don’t know. They just asked for my name!” My fear is starting to rise as he walks towards the bed and grips the sheet in his hand to pull away from my body.
“You must know who you were talking to. What did you tell them?”
“Sergei! I didn’t say anything. I promise. I know what I can and can’t say. You have to believe me.” I’m practically begging while he processes what I said in his mind.
He yanks the sheet off the bed, throwing it on the ground before stalking towards me. I’m inching up the bed as far as I can go until my back is smashed against the headboard. “You listen to me, Varya. If you talk to those mother fuckers again, I will kill you.”
My heart seizes in my chest at hearing him say such vial words to me. He has never been the cute and romantic type of man, but he never threatened to kill me before.
I nod. “I won’t talk to anybody.”
His hand comes out towards me but I flinch before he can touch me. Sergei’s brain is processing my flinching because of him about to touch me. He knows what he is doing but is doing it anyways.
He knows he is scaring me.
Is he going to kill me? I have no idea. I hope he isn’t going to kill me. We are in the middle of the ocean. He could dump my body into the water and no one would know I was there.
The fear rises and chokes me all at the same time.
Sergei’s fingers touch my hair to lightly brush it out of my eyes. “You’re such a beautiful woman. I would hate for something bad to happen to you.”
He leaves right after that leaving the words hanging in the air.
