Chapter Eighteen
Varya
My heart thumps in my chest as police and an ambulance takes off with Sergei’s body in it. I can’t believe Sergei is dead and I can’t believe I watched him die.
Maksim wouldn’t let me go to him to say anything or see him up close. He was worried there would be another bomb that went off. He kept smiling and looking at his phone as if he was waiting for a text message or something.
“Miss, can you tell us anything more about your friend before we leave?” The cop asks me.
I shake my head. Since Sergei and I were married in Cyprus, our marriage isn’t technically legal. I didn’t want to correct the police officer and tell the truth. I didn’t want to be the one who spilled the beans on everything even though I know they know.
Lennie is talking to one of the officers but keeps looking over his shoulder at me like he’s waiting for something more to happen. I can’t hear what he is saying but I see a bag handed to the officer who leaves quickly.
Maksim comes up behind me and places his arm around my waist. “Are you okay, little fish?”
I nod truthfully. I’m okay and I know I will be okay. Everything that has happened with Sergei only proved that I was not meant to be with him. After the way he treated me, I knew I didn’t love him.
Maksim kisses my temple.
Boris walks out of the house with a skip in his step. “Pahkan,we got the stuff and the delivery has been made.”
Maksim lets out a deep breath. “It is about time.”
I smile and look one last time at Sergei’s body being loaded up into the back of the ambulance. I don’t cry when the ambulance driver doesn’t turn on the sirens. In fact, I expected it. I expected him to end this war with him dying.
“What happens now?” I ask. I’m looking around the yard that is full of debris and shrapnel. I’m actually trying to figure out what is about to happen to me. Now that Sergei is dead, is Maksim still going to want me?
What does that make me?
