“Even though we were not top-notch agents, we still had to get approval as to who was told about our involvement.”

“What do you mean, not top-notch?”

“We weren’t considered real agents. We were more assets, although we trained as agents.”

His gaze narrowed. “Why?”

“Why were we trained?”

He nodded.

“Well, Mom was an agent before she met Dad. She said that if we were going to continue helping the US government, they would train us to protect ourselves.”

“So, you had to tell someone? Get approval to tell me?”

She nodded, unsure where he was going with this line of questioning, but she was starting to see that he was putting some kind of puzzle together.

“Who knew?”

She blinked. “Well, El.”

“Okay, I get that your brother knew.”

“And my parents knew about you.”

“You told your parents about me?”

“Yes.”

He digested that. “But workwise, who knew? You said you needed to get it approved, so who did you tell?”

“Oh. Well, Uncle Marv, who would have sent it up the ladder for approval. You had an extensive record with NCIS and top security clearance. So it only took a week to get approval. How did you find out? That I was with the CIA?”

“Word came through another agent.”

“CIA?”

He shook his head. “Amy.”

She bit her lip as she started putting the pieces together herself. “Someone knew about the two of us, and the fact that Amy was hot for you.”

“She wasn’t?—”

“Kapone, she practically jumped you when we broke up. They used her.”

“Yeah.”

“And don’t feel guilty. She put my entire world in jeopardy by leaking the information. She knew that my family could become targets the moment she let it out who we were. She didn’t care.”

“Yeah, well, either way, we can’t ask her who told her because she’s dead.”

She blinked, realizing that they hadn’t even thought about who might have told Kap. They should have.

“How?”

“She transferred back to the States after I told her that I wasn’t interested in a relationship. A car accident. Bad weather.”

Or, she had help.
