And I don’t necessarily believe I’m anything short of those things. I just don’t know how to reconcile him being alarmingly dangerous, but at the same time, unfathomably, the safest haven for me.
CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
“This sin is on me.”
Tillie
“WHERE ARE YOU GOING?You missed the turn.”
“I made dinner reservations for us at a private—”
“No, take me home.” I’m still in a mood almost thirty minutes later. “I would hate for us to run into any more of your ‘enemies’ and put myself in danger.”
As expected, he doesn’t even attempt to change my mind. He turns the car around.
Fine. If he wants the path that’s easier, he can take it.Freaking coward.
When he pulls to a stop outside my house, we don’t exchange words. I slam out of the vehicle and flounce inside without a backward glance, cursing him under my breath.
Once inside, I ring up Sunny and vent about what a major dick he is.
After almost an hour of ranting and hating on him, I, pathetically, start to miss him.
Climbing down from my prideful high horse, I hang up with Sunny and pull up my text chain with Saint.
Me:Coming by tonight?
The bastard takes almost fifteen minutes to respond. As if I don’t damn well know he’s more attached to his phone than he is to his dick.
Fraud: Pulling an all-nighter with Core Six. Sleep well.
Arrgh!
Two minutes later, I’m on the phone with Sunny again, calling him every horrible name in the book. Until Sunny is snoring on the other end, fast asleep. Which leaves me feeling like an inconsiderate jerk since it’s almost 2:00 a.m. there. She deserves all the flowers in the world for putting up with a friend like me.
I hang up and attempt to vibe with myself. But one peek at the fresh ink on my skin and the next thing I know, I’m climbing out of a car service in Red Cage’s parking lot.
At this hour, Trent will have already gone home to Lexi. Torin and Reuben are overseas. And Tripp is almost never at the office. So it’s a safe risk right now.
“Hey, Kayla,” I greet the receptionist when she buzzes me in. “I’m here to meet Guy. He said he’s working all night with Core Six and I could swing by anytime?”
“Oh, hi, Tillie. Yes, of course. You can head right up.”
“Can you check if my bracelet is still restricted from his floor?”
“Ah, one moment.” She swipes around on the monitor for a few seconds. “Yes, yes, you’re all clear.”
All of a sudden, huh?Bastard. “Thanks, Kayla.”
When I make it up to the tech floor, Saint’s not in his office. But I do hear his rich, deep voice filtering from Core Six’s subsection.
I’m reclined in his arctic office, limbs shivering, for roughly fifteen minutes before he finally walks in with no surprise whatsoever to find me waiting.
His stolid gaze drifts over the flirty minidress I’m wearing now and lingers at the V-cut neckline revealing too much cleavage before settling on my face. “What are you doing here?”
Jerk. “I missed you.”
He strides to his desk. “Two hours ago, you couldn’t get out of my car fast enough.”
