Epilogue

Valentine’s Day.

Sam glanced at his watch, hoping that he was still making good time. He pulled into the parking lot of Dempsey’s grocery store, and headed straight to the flower section. He picked out a brightly colored bouquet of wildflowers and walked up to the front counter. No wine tonight. If Abby wasn’t drinking, neither was he. There were plenty of other ways to celebrate their anniversary.

“Big plans tonight?” the lady behind the register asked, lifting one thin eyebrow up on her forehead.

Sam found himself grinning from ear to ear. While most of the people in Blushing Bay were celebrating the commercial holiday on the calendar, he was celebrating so much more.He almost lost Abby for good last spring. If he had, he’d be a lost man right now. Instead, he was looking forward to the next chapter of his life. He was going to be a father! He still couldn’t believe that one,but he was up for the challenge. As a team, he and Abby would be great parents.

After paying for the flowers, he walked to the parking lot and got inside his truck. He made a quick phone call to his dad on the way.

“Stop hounding me,” his father said in lieu of hello. “I’m still kicking.”

“Good.”

“Shouldn’t you be home with Abby?”

“T-minus ten minutes,” Sam said with a laugh. “Sure you’re okay?”

“Matter of fact, I have a lady friend over tonight. It is Valentine’s Day after all.”

Sam thought his dad was kidding until he heard a woman’s voice in the background. Well, what do you know. Love seemed to be in the air for all the Sawyer men these days.

“And you’re cramping my style. Give Abby my love,” his dad said.

“Will do.”

A few minutes later, Sam pulled into the driveway even earlier than he’d promised he would. He had a lot of time to make up for after all. He grabbed his flowers and headed up the steps with a tune on his tongue and a skip in his step. Opening the front door, he called, “Honey, I’m home!”

Abby stepped into the front room and beamed at him.

Damn,he loved this woman.

His gaze drew to the swell of her stomach. Walking over, he lowered his head and talked to their baby. “Honey, I’m home.”

Her stomach shifted under his hand.

“Oh! Did you feel that?” Abby laughed out loud. “She kicked.”

Sam straightened and leveled her with a look. “Strong and sassy, just like her mother. I’m in trouble.” He offered the flowers in his hand to Abby.

She briefly brought them to her nose and inhaled. Then she laid them on the coffee table nearby. “I think you’ll be fine,” she said, turning back to him. “We’ll go easy on you.”

Sam chuckled as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Then he brushed his mouth to hers. “Might have to try for a boy next, to even out the testosterone.”

“We need to have this one before we start trying to make another.”

Sam kissed her again, lingering longer this time. “Nothing saying we can’t practice while we wait. Practice makes perfect, right?”

Abby grinned against his cheek, and then took his hand and tugged him toward the bedroom. “Things couldn’t be any more perfect if you ask me…But we can practice anyway.”
