“Enjoy the moment,” Dad replied, soaking up the attention. “That’s what I’m doing.”

As my eyes continued to search, I, at last, saw Abbey and a heavily pregnant Chloe. Tissues to hand, they beamed my way. I was so pleased they’d made it and I couldn’t wait to properly catch up with them after the service.

“Aunty Tess!” Ruby called out. Climbing up on her chair, she frantically waved, causing a ripple of laughter amongst all the guests.

“Hello, sweetheart,” I replied, my voice shaking.

It was the sight of Leo waiting for me that kept me moving forward. Although he wasn’t the only one to melt my heart; wearing a shirt collar and bright red tie, Otis did too. I was clearly the odd one out, because, like Dad and India, Leo appeared to be relishing every second of the proceedings. As was Mum, I also noted.

Trying not to laugh, I took in her serious demeanour as Dad and I, at last, came to a standstill. Holding a book in her hand, she wore a straight face, a long black vestment, and a stole embellished with a dove on one side and a pair of wedding rings on the other.

Looking every inch the ordained minister, Mum looked out on the congregation. “We are gathered here today…”
