What he doesn’t say but I can hear in his tone is, “You want to videotape my wife and me having sex?”
Thanks, but no thanks.
“You would turn it off when you enter the room and back on before you leave. Make sure the door is locked from the inside when you’re in the room. The unknown suspect has only entered the rooms when no one is in them.”
“I’ll need to talk to my wife first, but I don’t believe it will be a problem for her. National security is as important to her as it is for the next person.”
Isabelle passes him our business card. It doesn’t give away much information about the nature of our company. It also doesn’t have either of our names listed. For security reasons.
The last thing you want is for the wrong people to get ahold of the card and realize it doesn’t jive with your cover.
That never goes well.
Davis leaves to catch up with his wife.
Since we have time before we’re due to meet up with Landon, we head outside to check who’s by the pool. Caroline and her husband aren’t there, but Anthony and Demek are, along with Blake and Virginia.
Mildred and Keith, a couple in their sixties, who are also in our sex group, are sitting with them.
Demek waves us over.
“I was telling everyone how I know Landon,” Anthony says to Isabelle and me after we sit down.
“Landon?” Isabelle asks, doing a great job of looking clueless. “Who or what is that?”
“The man who came into the classroom while we were making the leek pie.”
“You mean that tall, delicious drink of a man?” Virginia asks. Without waiting for Anthony to answer, she says to her husband, “We should see if he’s seeing anyone. They might be interested in double-dating with us.”
I almost snort a laugh because I can guarantee Landon is neither dating anyone nor is he into swinging.
At least not in the way they’re thinking.
“So how do you know him?” Isabelle casually asks.
“The company I used to work for hired him and the security firm he works for to do surveillance on an employee they believed might be stealing company secrets.”
Fuck.
“Did he catch the thief?” Blake asks at the same moment Demek says in his sexy Russian accent, “Why do you think he’s pretending to be a maintenance worker at the resort?”
“Maybe he’s not pretending.” Isabelle’s casual tone matches her cool-as-a-sliced-cumber expression. “Maybe he really is a maintenance worker now.”
“I don’t know.” Virginia smiles as though she’s having impure thoughts about him. Thoughts that would cause even a sailor to blush. “I like the idea better that he’s a spy.”
She traces her fingers up and down Blake’s arm. “Don’t you think it would be fun if we role-played with him? He could be an international spy and you’re the bad guy. And you both want me.”
Isabelle’s nonchalant expression switches to a wince.
I have to agree with her there. When it comes to our colleague, that’s an image neither of us wants.
“So why do you think he’s here?” Demek asks his husband.
Anthony shrugs. “He said he left the company he worked for because the job wasn’t as interesting as you would think.”
“And you don’t believe him?” Demek asks. “Do you think he’s here to spy on the guests?”
My stomach clenches to the size of a shriveled pea.
