Gabrielle will have quite the headache when she wakes up. On the bright side, she’ll get to skip the hangover.
“But I’ll admit,” I say to him, “having an entire bottle of wine would knock me out, too.”
We get to work on rescuing my grandmother. Landon tries to tell the guys that we’ve located her, but his voice goes out to dead air. He frowns. “What the hell?”
“Has that happened before?”
He shakes his head. “No, this is a first.”
Granny opens the window farther and removes the bug screen. Landon gives me a boost up.
I pull myself all the way in, with Granny’s help, and tumble to the floor. Then I check on Gabrielle. She’s still unconscious, but who knows how long that will last?
While Landon hoists himself through the window—thanks to his thick muscles and years of training with the SEALs—I search for something to tie Gabrielle up with.
Luckily for us—not so fortunate for Gabrielle—the person who uses this office has handcuffs in the desk drawer.
“Do I want to know what those are for?” Landon asks.
“Well, considering there’s also a red silk tie in the drawer where I found them…” I leave the rest of the sentence hanging, letting him fill in the blanks for himself.
Gabrielle isn’t visibly bleeding from the head, and her pulse and breathing aren’t erratic, but she’ll definitely need medical attention as soon as possible.
Between the two of us, Landon and I manage to gag her and handcuff her to the desk. I check her pupils. They’re evenly dilated, and both constrict when exposed to my penlight.
“Is she going to be okay?” Granny whispers.
“Probably. But better her being out cold than getting us killed.” I hug my grandmother. “You did great.”
“Now you know where you inherited your super-spy skills,” she says with a wink.
“Do you know if there’s anyone outside your door?” Landon asks her.
“I have no idea. I only saw one man who looked like some sort of security guard. I doubt the lawyer who was with Vadik Orlov would stand around and watch the door. He didn’t seem the type.”
“What about Orlov? Any idea where he is?” I ask.
“I overheard him say something about talking to some customers, but I have no idea what they were talking about. I got the idea during the drive here that this winery is really a front for something else.”
“You’re lucky Bernard is a sentimental fool, and we figured out where he brought you,” I tell her. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t have known where to find you.”
“It wasn’t luck. He knew you’d figure it out. Or at least he hoped you were smart enough to figure it out.”
I glance at the door, expecting someone to come bursting through it now that she’s revealed that tidbit.
“You mean this is a trap?” Landon asks.
“I think so. Which means you’ve got to get out of here before they return. Where’s Jayden?”
“In the hidden surveillance van.”
Granny releases a long breath, her shoulders sagging slightly. “That’s good. Now we just need to get you out of here.” Her gaze is directed at me when she says it.
“We’re not going anywhere without you.”
“You have to, Isabelle. You’re the bait. Without you, they can’t get to Jayden.”
“What are you talking about?” Landon asks.
