“Did you know she could do that?” she asks Sophie.
The equally stunned blonde shakes her head. “I’ve never seen her flirt like that before.”
Aubrey brushes her hair out of her eyes, gaining the cowboy’s attention.
His gaze sweeps down her body and he smiles approvingly. Aubrey leans back slightly, making a show of checking out his butt.
“Are you taking notes, Kate?” Sophie asks.
“How does she make it look so easy?” I mentally follow along with her actions as if I’m the one doing them. Flirting was never my thing. Luckily for me, it isn’t an essential skill I need for landing a boyfriend.
But maybe it’s a necessary skill for keeping said boyfriend.
Aubrey tosses her hair over her shoulder while giving her cowboy a smoldering look.
“Seriously,” Violet says, “where did she learn to do all of that? And why haven’t I seen her do it at Joe’s? I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen her flirt.”
“Me neither,” Sophie responds.
The cowboy leans closer to Aubrey as if he’s about to share a secret.
The waitress delivers our order and asks if we would like anything else. We tell her we’re good for now.
Smiling sweetly, Aubrey runs her fingers down the cowboy’s arm.
And then kicks him in the shin.
“What the hell?” he cries out.
Sophie winces. “Ouch, that’s gonna hurt.”
“Yep, that’s more like the Aubrey we know and love,” Violet says as Aubrey flounces back to our table.
I pick up my water. “I assume the last bit isn’t part of the whole cowgirl-flirting concept she was talking about.”
“Yeah, I recommend you avoid that last move. Noah probably won’t appreciate it.”
I don’t have a chance to tell them again that nothing’s going on between Noah and me—depending on your definition of “nothing’s going on.” Aubrey drops to her seat.
“What a dumbass,” she grumbles. She grabs her vegetarian burger and sinks her teeth into it like she’s imagining sinking them into the cowboy’s arm.
“What the heck happened up there?” Violet asks.
We have to wait for Aubrey to finish chewing before we get an answer. “He asked me out on a date.”
I blink. “And that’s a bad thing?” As far as I can tell, Aubrey doesn’t have a boyfriend, either in Copper Creek or anywhere else.
“Very much a bad thing. Boyfriends are nothing but trouble.” She glances at her two friends. “Present company’s boyfriends excluded. You two landed the only two decent boyfriends out there. The rest were abducted by aliens.”
I chuckle. I can’t help it. “I have to agree with Aubrey on that one. Although I think my brothers and cousins aren’t too bad, but I might be biased there.”
“Too bad your brothers and cousins don’t live in Copper Creek.” She takes another bite of her burger. “Plus, the jerk made a douchebag comment right after he asked me out.”
The cowboy collects his order and leaves without giving Aubrey a second glance.
We finish our food and head back to Copper Creek…to begin my transformation for tonight.
