Right.

She already has an alpha and has no need for me.

“And how did you meet Pack Harris, Finnegan?”

I ignore Da’s raised eyebrows and explain how I came to know them, causing him to chuckle.

“It feels like your ma had a hand in that. It’s exactly something she would’ve done.” He shakes his head, a sad smile on his lips.

I snort. “What? Ma throwing an omega in my path? She would never.”

We laugh together because it’s something she did a lot when I was younger.

I love the idea that ma was the one who set Alora in my path—even though I’ll never be able to call her mine.

Da sighs, turning his attention back to Alora and her pack. “I don’t know what your plans are for the day, but I know it would mean a lot to me if you were there when we spread the ashes.”

“Oh, Da, I’m sure they have other?—”

“We’d love to,” Jordan says as he cuts me off. “We enjoyed the time we spent with Fiona and with you, Alistair. We definitely didn’t get enough time with Finn to get to know him, and I feel that needs to be rectified.”

Yeah, I’m freaking out a little over here.

I was never supposed to see Alora again, and now she’s standing here at my ma’s funeral with her pack. Somehow they’ve been invited to spread her ashes—something that’s only meant to be for family and close friends.

Hell, the fact that they knew my ma is mind-boggling.

“But only if it’s okay with you, Finn.” Alora’s voice is quiet, her sobs finally stopping.

As soon as my eyes meet hers, I know there’s no way I can say no to her.

“You should come,” I find myself saying.

Wells nods. “Good. Then it’s decided. When do we need to be there?”

I zone out again as Da gives them the information until Alora lays her hand on my arm.

She offers me a sad smile. “I really am sorry about your mom, and if you need anyone to talk to, I’m happy to listen.”

“I…uh…thank you,” I manage to spit out as she squeezes my arm.

Then they’re gone, and I’m left wondering what the hell just happened.

Chapter Eight

WELLS

It’s kind of hard to hate a guy whose mom just died.

Although I’m sure part of that is the fact that Finnegan Abernathy seems to be a genuinely good person.

Somehow, Alora was able to talk him and his dad into coming out to eat with us after they spread Fiona’s ashes over the edge of the lookout.

I’m honestly not even sure how she did it.

They both said they were going to head home and take some time for themselves, but within fifteen minutes, we were all headed to a restaurant in Glenmore.

Alistair left about twenty minutes ago after we finished eating, and Jordan assured him we’d see that Finn made it home. Finn didn’t seem like he wanted to stay, but with just a few words from Alora, he was agreeing.
