“It is done.”

Chills wash over me as I stare at the beast, my monster, my nightmare, trapped so much I was, all those years before. Stone inches its way up his fallen body, but his eyes are red in anger.

I spin to find Ty and Kari manipulating the stone together to cover him.

The final look the Night Bringer gives me promises death. But it is a promise he will never fulfill. Kari and Ty complete their project, covering him entirely.

“The Light Ancient died too,” Rev says.

“Yes,” I whisper, heart aching. I don’t know if he knew this mission would cost him his life, like Drake implied.

“He knew. When he saved Reveln, he knew what it would cost to continue the fight. And he was proud to do it. Proud to end his life protecting his creations.”

My heart clenches.

“Is that it?” Blane asks from the tunnel a few feet away.

I nod “Are you all right?”

Blane shrugs. His eyes tell me he’ll be haunted by his brother’s death for a long time.

“Now what?” Kari whispers.

“We leave the mountains. Kari and Ty, can you destroy this mountain entirely? Smash it good so no one will ever find the tunnel that leads here?”

Ty and Kari nod as one.

“Then, you all will go back to the fae realm, and Rev and I will stay behind.”

“Why does Rev have to stay?” Raven asks quietly.

“It was his magic that sealed the prison. If he leaves this world, the power binding it could break. Kari and Ty, you’ll take the spell book back to the fae realm and destroy the portals—so the prisoner and the key can ever be reunited. The Night Bringer will remain encased forever if we do this right.”

“But,” Raven says uncertainly, “all three of us completed the spell. Do I have to stay too?” Her eyes dart to Aurora, who smiles reassuringly.
