“Is Kari okay?” I ask the book. He pauses long enough to cause nausea to roil through me. “Is she okay?” I repeat.

“She is not currently dying, but she was bitten by a wraith. There are few fae in the realm able to heal that sort of wound.”

I nod quickly, even as my teeth chatter. She needs Rev.

“Was it Drake? The attack?” I begin hastily tossing things into my backpack. I make a lot of assumptions, but I’ve come to learn that it’s better to check because sometimes things are more complicated than they appear.

“Drake instructed the wraiths when and where to attack, yes.”

“I’m going to kill him too,” I tell the book.

“The world would be better off without him,” it agrees.

I store the spell book in my bag, forcing it in between rolled up items of clothing. “Is it a trap?” I ask, stilling as the idea crosses my mind.

“I do not know intentions,” the book tells me again, speaking slowly, “but I see no specific actions that imply they are preparing for an ambush. They do know you will immediately help Kari, and anytime you follow their expectations, there is risk.”

I nod and finish closing the bag. “Thank you,” I tell the book. “For all of your help.”

“It is my duty.”

“I know. But you don’t have to give advice or kind words, yet you often offer them. Even when I’m less than polite to you.”

The book chuckles. “I appreciate the appreciation.”

I shrug and head out into the hall to find Rev. He’s probably still in the meeting, but I’ll be ready to head straight to the Crystal Court when he’s through.

Rev

Iam the first to burstfrom the meeting room to find Caelynn. In my three days here in the Frost Court, I’ve spent most of my time in our rooms and the rest at a few meals and meetings. I’ve tried my best to show appreciation to our hosts—after the near destruction of the High Court island, the Frost Court offered us their hospitality. For the High Queen and I, that’s not a surprise. But even after Caelynn’s actions that saved us, most of the rulers do not look kindly on her. The Frost Court was one of only three that offered her a place as well.

But even so, I frequently receive looks of suspicion when I head back to my room, where they all know the Shadow fae is hiding. I don’t know what they think of us lodging together. I don’t really care.

Today is no different. I rush up to our rooms to find Caelynn and tell her we’ve got to go straight to the Crystal Court. But then again, I suspect she’s already aware. Especially considering when I enter the bed-chamber, her backpack and the spell book are nowhere to be seen.

I grab my own bag and rush back down to find her.
