She rolled her eyes at herself and stifled a chuckle at her paranoia.

But when she put her foot on the first step, she couldn’t help glancing back to see if something else had grabbed his attention.

No. His evil gaze remained pegged on her.

The two guards ate their food and talked, oblivious to what their resident crazy shifter was doing.

Beast turned to look over his shoulder at Bosse’s empty cell, then swung back around and locked eyes with her. He sniffed hard in her direction, cocked his head, and pulled his lips back in a scary smile. His eyes gleamed with the look of an animal that had cornered its prey.

He knew.

Her body shook with realizing he could finger her. She had no idea how he’d figured it out, but Beast knew she’d helped Bosse.

Chapter 14

Bosse slept for shortbursts during the flight. The one time he dropped into a deep sleep, Alifair appeared again. He’d worried he’d never dream of her again, but there she was, sitting down next to him, but he couldn’t move his cuffed hands to touch her.

She brushed the hair out of his eyes with her fingers. “I can’t believe someone captured you again. What is wrong with shifters?”

“I am not the one to ask. I have met no good ones. You should not be here. These are bad people.”

“They can’t see me.”

He believed her. How could she be here, yet no one sees her?

She leaned in and hugged him.

He sighed at the soothing energy from her touch. If he could just find a way to keep that with him, he could face what was coming.

Sighing softly, she said, “I wish I could help you escape again.”

He soaked up the feeling of her next to him and released a sigh of contentment. He had never asked for much in life or been given the opportunity to create a life he wanted to live. He’d spent too many years battling to survive and believed he’d lost the ability to feel anything for another person.

Then sweet Alifair left him cookies.

Not wanting her to stay in case whatever spell shielded her broke and Kinter found her here, he had to send her home. Bosse would not allow these animals to touch her. He turned his lips to her cheek and kissed her. “You did enough. My wolf and I tried our best. Too many vile shifters in this world.”
