Her arms had been straight up, but now her elbow bent, and her hands hung slack. She opened her eyes and looked up, then pulled her wrists free of the ropes that moved like giant rubber bands.
Rubbing her raw wrists, she looked over to find Magdelina had tears in her eyes. “That was a delight to watch.”
Rez grinned. “Your mother would be so proud of you.”
Alifair had to fight back tears. She had never been so proud of herself but had more to do. “Thank you both.” She hurried over to free both women, who massaged their bruised wrists.
As soon as they stood, Alifair said, “Stay behind me, and we’ll escape before Krol figures out what is happening.”
“What are you planning to do?” Rez asked.
Still thrilled at her small success, Alifair hoped she could do what she had in mind now.
This was what she had worried about trying. If her gift faltered now, they’d all die, but they were no safer staying in here.
Chapter 46
Bosse could not standin the tree cover and wait another second when he had no idea where Alifair was or what might be happening to her.
After walking out of a lower level, Krol stepped around the end of the wall and did not come back. Within a few minutes, he appeared at the top of the largest building of three stories and leaped to the ground, landing with the agility of a lion shifter. His head swiveled from side to side.
Was he looking for someone... or something? He began walking forward and lifting his hand, palm out in the direction of the trees on the other side from where Bosse hid. It was as if Krol motioned someone to stay put.
Titan said,Dirt is moving around with no wind.
What was his wolf talking about? Bosse searched the grounds all the way back to the room Krol had vacated. That’s when he noticed dirt near the ground-floor entrance to a two-story building.
The dust puffed up as if disturbed by someone walking there.
He told his wolf,I see it, but I have no idea what that is. It’s moving to the far right. We need to watch our backs in case that is being caused by a wilkotauk.
If that was a wilkotauk, Bosse needed to move left to add more distance between them.
Titan said,I hear whispering from whatever is moving the dirt.
Bosse kept Krol in sight as he tuned out the sounds of critters scurrying around the woods. His heart lurched when he recognized a voice. Alifair.
