Her pulse raced, and her heartbeat did double time.

If that was Krol, she was out of time for planning.

Bosse moved, getting into a better position, and pulled her closer to him.

He would wake the minute she tried to rise. She took slow breaths, trying to calm her heart, or that noise might wake him. While she pulled herself together, she ran multiple scenarios through her mind.

Chapter 39

Wake up!

Bosse stirred, then grumbled and fell back into a deep sleep.

Hurry! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!

Shaking his head, Bosse fought to open his eyes. What was wrong with Titan? Bosse lifted his head, unable to see anything, and plopped back on the blanket.

Mate is gone!

What had his wolf said? Titan had never shouted so loudly in his head, but the word mate finally got through, snapping Bosse awake. His head banged, and he was still groggy.

Get up!Titan roared again, sending ice water through Bosse’s veins.Mate is gone! His brain got that. Breathing hard, panic brought Bosse fully awake. He reached for Alifair.

His hand landed on an empty blanket. No!

Bosse rubbed his eyes and forced himself to sit up. Trying to wake up was like trudging through quicksand.Where is she, Titan?Bosse pushed up to stand and sidestepped to stay upright as he dressed.

I do not know. I smelled a strange scent that woke me.

Bosse leaned on a tree to keep from falling. What kind of scent?

Magic.

That made his heart stutter. Could Krol be here and the trade happening? Where was Alifair? Why hadn’t he heard her get up or felt her pull away from his embrace?
