The crazy lion shifter had not been pretending to live in medieval times.
He really believed he was a ruling king of that period.
Justin’s voice came quickly.I’ve spotted a wagon that fits the description the guard gave us.
All the tiring, hard miles fell away at the sound of hope in Justin’s voice.
Adrian asked,Can we get to him now?
No. His wagon pulled off the main thoroughfare and passed through a wooden gate. If you stand on the road, the dilapidated wooden gate seems to shield livestock from predators, but I’m two hundred feet up on the rise. Once you close the gate, you pass through an acre of weeds growing all around the dirt trail. There may be thirty yards of forest bordering all that. Then the land clears into a groomed lawn in front of a maintained estate. Guards are armed with rifles. Can’t tell what kind from here, but the way they hold their weapons and move around, they appear skilled.
Adrian hated missing the chance to overtake the wagon before Krol got that far. He told Justin,Tell me how to find you, and we’ll come up with a plan for when he leaves. If the rest of what he told his guards was true, Krol can’t stay long if he’s only hiring more guards here for his main purpose at another stop. He intends to do all that and return to the castle in a matter of days.
Justin agreed,That’s a lot to accomplish, depending upon multiple ifs.He gave Adrian directions to his observation spot.
Red changed course and headed that way.
Gallize shifters were apex predators, unlike any other shifters Adrian had ever heard about or met. What could be so special about the assassins Krol came all this distance to hire?
Why would he need those for whatever he had planned for the women?
Nothing sucked more on a mission than trying to function with inferior intel.
Chapter 33
Having spoken a codeword at the entrance to the Opátka estate, Krol remained inside the wagon until it rolled onto a stone drive that circled in front of a Victorian estate other shifters would not come near.
He was not just a shifter. He was a king who feared no one.
His lion rumbled a snarling sound. Krol silently warned the animal locked inside his body,Do not make a sound while in this place or even try to shift.
Tall guards in black vests and matching pants carried rifles he knew had to be loaded with titanium bullets.
He leaped from the rear opening of the wagon, having shifted back to human form to ride inside for the last three kilometers. The Gallize mate, Magdelina, had skewered him with her black eyes. Not really black, but inside here, any orbs not glowing may as well be black holes.
She could stare all she wanted, but she could not break titanium handcuffs.
