Alifair asked, “What is a sanctuary for shifters?”
Justin said, “Similar to a reservation for Native Americans.”
She wrinkled her nose at that and then exclaimed, “What about Bosse? He has earned his freedom, right? He’s here helping you.”
Bosse loved how she stood up for him. No one had done that, not even his mother. He leaned over to reply before Adrian had to say something. “I have a place to live. These people and their Guardian have been very good to me, but thank you for your words.”
Her cheeks pinked. She was already pretty as a freshly bloomed rose and got cuter by the moment. Why did she have to make him question where he stood with her or what she really wanted from him?
Adrian ended the meeting. “Time to get rolling. Justin and I have ground to make up to catch Krol, and we don’t know at what point he will do something with his captives.”
Vic reached into his backpack and flipped two gray packets the size of a man’s hand to Adrian. “The last changes of clothes for you and Justin if you shred yours.” Then he pulled out a long knife and handed it to Bosse. “In case you need more than claws and teeth.”
Bosse accepted the weapon, glad to have it, but he would not admit as much in front of Alifair. She worried so much as it was.
He would keep her safe no matter how many had to die.
Chapter 31
Why couldn’t Krol usea car or a truck? The minute Bosse was done with all this, he intended to live a modern life. Maybe not flying so much, but he could learn to drive a vehicle like the truck Adrian had used to take them to the airport.
He didn’t have to keep looking around to see if they were being followed, but he had a bad feeling. No smell had reached him. Maybe he was just on edge with all that had happened. He asked Titan,Do you scent any threat around us?
No, but I feel eyes on us. Could be a natural animal staying downwind to keep an eye on a predator.
True.Bosse hadn’t considered that. They were moving too slowly to suit him.
He’d never cared for riding horses, but this would be easier on Alifair and faster than walking.
Having her in front of him with her soft bottom rubbing against him with the back-and-forth flow of the horse sure as hell wasn’t easier on him.
All that wasn’t even close to being as bad as the chilly silence between them.
He missed her genuinely warm, open personality, but he could not get past the idea that he’d been a means to an end. He’d smashed his emotions into dust the first week in Krol’s castle. Battling and killing one shifter after another he had no ill feelings toward had left him numb. Watching the life fade from their eyes had taken a toll on his soul.
If not for owing Titan his best effort, Bosse might have allowed one of the shifters to kill him and end his misery. He’d never killed before landing in that castle unless he was fighting for his own life or that of a pack member.
