He told her of being captured again, which had her fisting her small hands. “I dreamed nonstop about you, sweetness. You were with me in the cave where I hid the first night, then on the airplane, and even when I woke up with the pack.”
Her lips parted in a small gasp.
“What?” He couldn’t figure out what he’d said to shock her.
“I had dreams of being with you. I didn’t know the last place, but I recall the cave and the airplane.”
His skin chilled at her admission. How could they be in each other’s same dreams? He’d think on that later. Continuing his story, he explained how one of the shifters waiting outside the castle saved him, and another offered him a place to live. “I am now part of their pack.”
“You have a home.” She’d said that so quietly, as if she missed not being at her home.
“Do not worry. I will take you back to your home.”
The partial smile she offered this time had no heart. “Let’s find the women first.”
Trying to read her face and reactions was beyond Bosse. He liked straightforward conversation but wanted to comfort her, not add to her stress.
When had he been the one to comfort someone? He found he liked this role. “Exactly. My shifter friends will be thrilled if you can help them. What will it take for you to dream of their location?”
She put her face in her hands. “My dreams feel off track. During all the weeks here, I never dreamed of Rez’s specific location inside this castle. I don’t know if I can find them.” Lifting her head to face him, she had never looked as defeated as now.
Her people expected her to enter a dangerous place and save their leader. Alifair now took on an even greater burden.
He would not allow her to shoulder everyone’s problems. And not alone. “The shifter mate is not your responsibility.”
“But she is,” Alifair argued. “We became friends in a short time. She asked me to give her mate a message because she fears dying before seeing him again.”
How could anyone expect her to find a mate not even the powerful Gallize people could locate at this moment? It wasn’t as if she could depend upon a dream for everything.
Taking one of her small hands in his rough one twice the size of hers, he said, “Look at me.”
Worried eyes glistened with fears of failure.
He carefully squeezed her fingers. He would not risk trying to sneak out to deliver information to the Gallize shifters. He might not make it back in to find Alifair again, which was unacceptable. He’d take his chances staying here and wait to see if she might just dream of a location.
Then he’d send the flying paper to Adrian and the team.
He spoke confidently, which he felt she needed right now. “Youwillsleep, and I will watch over you. With me to prevent anyone from harming you, try to relax and allow your power to guide you. Whether you find Rez and the mate or not, I must send a message to my team before daylight.”
“What happens at daylight?” Her voice lifted with hope.
She had to be calm to sleep and dream. For that reason, he told her as much of the truth as he could.
“They will break us out of here.” He did not share the gamble he’d have to make for his friends to have a fighting chance at surviving an attack on the castle.
Worrying her about him being the first to step into the line of fire would not aid her in falling asleep.
