Chapter 29
––––––––
Freshly showered, Samfelt damn happy for having almost died yesterday. They’d survived though.
Score.
A shower hadn’t brought him out of his head where webs of dark memories captured him too often. Hailey had stomped into his life and demanded his attention.
After years of living with the guilt of not saving his mother or sister, of keeping women at arm’s length to avoid destroying another woman’s life, Hailey had wrecked him.
She’d obliterated any chance of another woman taking her place. He’d unfairly compare any future female to her.
He wanted only Hailey and no one else.
She had him thinking of what it would be like to have her in his life. How much he wanted to be the person who made her happy, kept her safe, and stood at her side.
He’d smile over outwitting that assassin but the idea of anyone harming Hailey dredged up his dark side. The side he’d done his best to keep tamped down so he could perform his duty for Logan and his team.
Being selected to join the FALCA team had been an honor and one he’d been determined to earn every minute.
But not this minute.
No one would fault him for taking a break with a woman, but his team were not fools. They at least suspected he had not left willingly at first.
Surveillance had been put into place to ensure no one came after him just because of what had happened in South America.
The minute he’d driven away with Hailey, Moose would have brought in Nitro. If Sam had sent a text alerting them that he was taking a few days with a friend, the team would accept his word.
Sam wouldn’t have sent that text. He couldn’t in good conscious intentionally lie to them.
He had no idea how all this would shake out, but he wanted a chance to explore what he and Hailey had once they saved everyone. He also wanted a chance to stay with HAMR.
Hell, he wanted everything, including saving her half-sister.
How the hell were they going to find Phoebe now?
The shower ran steadily. It sounded as if Hailey was singing. She’d woken during the night, gone to the bathroom, and returned with a warm rag.
