Angel stopped laughing.
Blade and Moose spoke at the same time. “Find Turner.”
No longer joking, Angel said, “Sam is saying he’s okay and going to find Turner.”
Nitro had gotten that answer too, which meant Sam was on his way to get killed. “Get packed.”
Every one of them knew that meant to load up weapons.
Moose had walked away then turned back to Nitro. “You callin’ Logan?”
“Have to. I can live with Sam losing his place in HAMR but not with his death.”
Chapter 24
––––––––
Sam gave thanks thatthis was a small community along the interstate. The two police cars and single fire department had their hands full figuring out what had happened at the little restaurant.
The fire department had the car fire snuffed out.
Where he and Hailey stood was dark as a tar pit compared to the restaurant where red and blue lights flashed.
A block away at the farthest end of the warehouse from the diner, Sam and Hailey crossed the road slowly to not draw any attention. The closest streetlight dimly lit was another block closer to the interstate.
He’d taken a moment to search the opposite side of the road from the warehouse to figure out what he’d believed the assassin had planned as his escape path.
One location made sense, but they didn’t have a lot of time to get this right.
When he reached the opposite side of the two-lane road with Hailey, he glanced to his right to be sure no one had taken off from the restaurant to come this way.
All still stood. Two people were talking with their arms waving.
Sam let out a sigh. The bystanders had survived.
Moving faster through weeds growing knee-high in a strip of land beside the left side of the pawnshop, he kept track of Hailey behind him. She stayed step for step on his heels. She was savvy and could handle herself in a fight, but she was not trained for being shot at by an assassin.
