Men who would kill anyone—man, woman, or child, so long as the money kept flowing.
W looked forward to meeting Esteban’s friend, another captive who had taken the shot that felled the leader of a Libyan drug-running group as Esteban and his friend escaped. That single kill would hand W the perfect attack for next year in August.
It would be like getting the best Christmas gift a year early.
For now, he would enjoy the terror heading for the eastern coast of the United States.
Chapter 10
––––––––
Hallene had the burnerphone on speaker while she scarfed down theViška Pogacashe’d grabbed on the way, surprised to have found the Croatian specialty in Caracas. She paid for two hours in a room at this vulgar hotel. The scumbag behind his bulletproof glass leered at her as if she were just one moreputadoing her nightly job.
Paying hourly worked for her.
Short of having a gun to her head, she wouldn’t touch the mattress in this place even with the stack of clean sheets the manager had passed through the hole to her.
She still wore the navy-blue shorts, gray T-shirt, and running shoes she’d put on at the shack in the woods.
Coop had taught her if she worked alone to always leave a backup escape bag of cash, another mobile phone, and clothes. She’d included a few more necessities like a pair of shoes, thankfully. At the last minute, she’d taken the duffel of clothes with her to the shack in case she found Phoebe naked. The shoes would have been too big, but Hallene would have made them fit the girl.
She hadn’t really expected to need clothes for herself.
“Ya thare, Hellie?” her underworld tech specialist in the UK, Midnight Ferret, asked.
“Yep.” She swallowed another bite. “Got anything yet?”
“Mebbe. In the last communication, Bahstard swore he’d ’ave his container ship in place by the weekend. Midday Friday local time, to be specific.”
She’d assigned the code name Bastard for Phoebe’s father, Adam Kovac. What was he doing with one of his ships?
It was just after midnight on Monday here, the same time zone as the US east coast. Was the ship heading to this side of the Atlantic Ocean?
She had until Friday to find Phoebe but had no idea why or where the Collector had gone. She was basing Friday on Kovac having to execute some plan of action she had no details on.
She couldn’t risk cutting it too close in case something changed.
