He stomped the accelerator, but whoever was behind them caught up to their SUV and hit the back corner at an angle.
They went spinning on the wet road, blowing up a wall of water.
He handled the car like a pro, but as they spun across the road, their attacker hit them broadside.
Airbags exploded. Hers hit her in the face.
The SUV dropped off the road, tilted, and rolled. Her head hit the window.
She saw stars.
The world continued spinning.
“Hallene!” Sam kept shouting her name. His hand grabbed her shoulder, then fell away when they suddenly hit hard.
They should be stopped.
The car was on its side and moving.
Floating.
No. They were sinking.
Chapter 35

Sam blinked, tryingto clear his vision. They’d hit the river. Fast moving current. He felt water coming in around his feet.
He punched his airbag to hurry the deflation. “Hallene!” Why hadn’t she answered? There was still enough light from outside to see her.
She was slumped forward over the airbag.
“Talk to me, baby.” He gently tugged on her shoulder.
“I’m ... I’m okay,” she breathed out as she lifted her head. Blood ran from her nose. “We’re in water.”
