This day couldn’t go by fast enough.Ifelt like a teenage boy about to go on a date with the prettiest girl in school.Asembarrassing as that thought was,I’dstill rather havethatthought than anything from this trial stuck in my head.
* * *
Manny had had a hard time testifying today.Thedefendant’s lawyer had tried to rip his testimony apart.Theprosecutor team had done their job as well, butMannystill wasn’t feeling great about it.
“Assholes like this guy get off way too easy every time,”Mannytold me, butIknew it too.
In the end,Inever got the chance to testify, because his testimony and cross-examination took more than five hours.
After the judge called for a recess until the following day,Mannywanted to drown himself in a drink.Ifound myself wanting to drown myself in the most beautiful womanIhad ever met, but she was still out with her friends.Iopted to takeMannyout for his drink and commiserate with him, hoping thatAcewould show up at some point andIcould let her beauty cheer me up.
Knowing it would be my turn to testify tomorrow,Ididn’t want to get drunk, soIsat withMannyat the bar and slowly worked my way through one beer while we chatted about anythingbutthe trial.
“My brother is thinking about joining the force with me,”Mannysaid.
Manny was my age, butI’dheard he had an older brother who went the military route like my cousin had. “Theone in the military?”
“Yeah,”Mannyconfirmed. “Hisname’sHector.He’sstill got another year left before he can bail, butIthink he’s trying to weigh his options.”
“You mention anything toCaptainKerrigan?”Iasked him. “Youknow he’d help fast-track him if you want him to, since he’s family.”
“OnceIknow whatHectorwants to do,I’llreach out.”
I nodded back, understanding where he was coming from.Wesat there in comfortable silence for a few moments, just enjoying our drinks.
“You ever think about gettin’ out?” he asked me.
“Out of law enforcement, you mean?”
“Yeah,” he sighed, staring at the label on his beer bottle as though it held all the answers to the world on it. “MostdaysIlove my job, but then there are days like today whereIdon’t thinkI’mcut out for it.”
