Ronan: It looks awesome. Tell Jax I said hi.
Mallory (Best SIL ever): HI JAX!! Love the tattoo, Carter!
I laughed when I saw the contact name for my brother’s wife. She must have taken my phone and changed it at some point.
Carter: Thanks, everyone! Also, Mallory, when did you steal my phone?
Mallory (Best SIL ever): Ha! I forgot I did that. It was at the wedding after Olivia made us all take shots.
“What are they saying?”
I jumped at the sound of Jax’s voice. I was so distracted by my family group chat, I didn't realize she had moved right beside me. I handed her my phone. “Might as well read it. They’re all over the place.”
Jax chuckled as she stared at my phone. “I love your family so much. I’m a little pissed, though. I’ve known your family longer than Mallory.Ishould be in the group chat. Guess I’ll just have to find a different way to get in,” she said with a wink as she handed the phone back to me.
I cleared my throat as I contemplated how to respond. I was terrible at flirting, so it would sound unnatural if I teased her back. For Jax, it was natural because it was just how she acted with everyone. “That’s one off of each of our lists,” I said to change the subject. “That’s a good start. Maybe tonight we can work on your dating profile.”
Jax crossed her arms over her chest and smirked at me. “Only if we can do your unplanned trip next week.”
“Next week?” She didn’t actually mean that, right? Taking a tripthatlast minute had to be impossible.
“Yeah. It’s perfect. I’m off Wednesday and Thursday. I’ll tell my boss I need to take off on Friday too. She owes me, so it won’t be an issue at all.”
My heart was beating out of my chest just thinking about everything that would go into taking a trip so soon. “That’s a week away. It’s impossible.”
Jax wasn’t deterred. In fact, her smile only grew in response to my doubt. “Do you trust me?”
“Of course I do.” Jax had never given me a reasonnotto trust her. Everything I had learned about her these past few weeks made me trust her even more.
“Perfect.” Jax clapped her hands together. “Relax and leave the details, or lack of details, to me.”
Relax. Sure.
Chapter 7
“So, where are we going?” I asked Jax as we took a rideshare to the airport. Jax hadn’t told me what I owed her for this trip yet, so I couldn’t even use that to try to guess where we might be headed.
“That’s a great question.”
I watched as Jax typedCheap last minute flightsinto her phone. My eyes practically shot out of my head. There was no way. She had to be joking.Right?“Please tell me you know where we’re going.”
“I could tell you that, but I don’t like to lie, so I won’t.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. It was just after 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Jax had to be back at work at 6 a.m. on Saturday, and we were headed to the airport with no destination in mind. How is she not freaking out right now?I was freaking out enough for both of us. I had to put my sweaty palms against my knees to keep my legs from nervously bouncing.
“Oh!” Jax said suddenly, causing me to jump. “There’s a sixty-five dollar flight to Orlando that leaves in two hours. We could spend a day at Disney World.”
“Disney World?” Now I knew she had to be lying. We went to Disney multiple times growing up and each trip was planned out months ahead of time.
Jax shrugged. “If you’re not a fan, we don’t have to. It was just a thought.”
“I love Disney World. I just don’t think it’s a trip you do on a whim.”
“Even more reasontodo it on a whim.”
“Fine.” I forced the word out between pursed lips. I couldn’t believe we were actually doing this. “But since we’llreally only have time for one park, I think we should look up which one will be the least crowded tomorrow.”
“Which park is your favorite?” Jax asked as she typed away on her phone, most likely buying tickets for a flight that we should have already arrived at the airport for.
