He runs toward the giant, sliding on his knees to dodge the swing of the club that was aimed at his head. He somehow manages to knock the giant off balance, connecting his leg to his knee. Keeping his momentum going he jumps up, taking his sword and slashing a deep gash in the giant's arm. These brothers are crazy, and I love it! Dark red blood flows from his forearm and onto the floor. The Giant screams, swiping his hand out and swatting Jeremiah into the wall with a harsh thump, but it doesn’t stop Jeremiah He gets up with renewed vibrance shaking his head as if to clear the concussion he's bound to have.
We bolt to the middle of the room. The brothers from the Watch are still locked in battle with the evil men. Becoming impatient, my head swivels towards the last exit expecting to find the twins. I’m surprised to find no one there. Even though we can’t see the twins, they are hiding around that exit somewhere, I just need to keep my Merrie-Beth away from danger.
"It’s a trap." I whisper to Merrie-Beth.
"I know, and whenever we get out of here, I'm running straight to my house. Then I’m going to throw all of the mirrors away and lock all the doors. Where are those stupid twins?" Merrie-Beth whispers back.
"I don't know, and it's starting to piss me off," I say impatiently.Taking my cell phone out of my pocket, I text my uncle since calling the police is out of the question.
We are in the lunchroom being held hostage! Some of the Watch is here! Oh, and I love you both!
If this ends with us, like, I don't know, dying, I had to let them know that I loved them. "I'm not sure if they can help us, but I just wanted them to know all the same."
Mer nods her head. "I hope your family can do something before it's too late."
I nod. "Me too, Mer, me too."
Those two twins picked the wrong girls to fuck with today. I've never been involved in a fight like this before, but I won’t back down. Nervous energy circulates through my veins, setting me on edge for what is to come. Keeping Merrie-Beth safe is my top priority, my only priority actually.I'm inwardly shaking, but I let confidence seep into my inner being anyway. Aunt Georgia's words engulf me,"you only need to visualize your victory, and you will be victorious."She taught me that one’s mind is a necessary tool in battle. We might still get murdered, hurt, or kidnapped, but they will scream out in agonizing pain before everything is said and done. I quickly pray for protection and then center myself. It’s time.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are, Assholes!" I taunt.
My favorite twin, the one with the longer hair, we'll call him Lunatic, pops out from underneath a table near the last exit. "There, there, Chosen One. Are you so ready to die?"
I laugh, a dry sound coming from my throat. "I'm not the Chosen. She's yet to be born."
He grins when he sees my expression. "Fear not, we haven’t come to kill you. Not today, anyway. Our boss wants to have a conversation with you. You're going to make us a lot of money, sweetheart."
I fold my arms across my chest. Reasoning with him will come to nothing. "Hard pass, and I ain't your sweetheart."
The other twin comes out from behind a counter close to where his brother had been hiding. We'll call this one, Dumbass. "You see, Arabella, it's nothing personal. We are just here to collect a paycheck, and if you come with us peacefully, then we will not harm you…much."Their tones are so casual.
My mind can't stop reeling from him calling me the Chosen. He’s ridiculous. Why would this woman pay all of them to kidnap me? My family isn't wealthy, so this can't be about a ransom. If it is, the jokes on them. I look at Merrie-Beth, and she shrugs her shoulders at me.
"We have no qualms about killing your friend. She's not needed. Would that be crazy enough for the both of you?" Lunatic says with a sneer.
After hearing Mer gasp, I take a deep breath, and enter attack mode. Some long-buried instinct takes control of me. Picking up a chair, I throw it at his face. Nobody will ever get away with threatening Merrie-Beth, she’s too kind. The chair barely misses his head but does clip his shoulder. My smile grows, but my eyes burn with anger. "Next time, I won't miss. Itwill be over my dead body before you touch even one hair on her head!"
"As you wish." Lunatic answers. He is the hotter head of the two. He looks at his ax, then back at my bestie. Arrogance drips from his voice.
"You're going to fight a girl who doesn't have a weapon with an ax?" I taunt.
"No one's ever made the mistake of calling me a gentleman. We're not taking any chances with you, Chosen. Although, I'm a little surprised to see that you're her. You don't look like much." He taunts back.
Okay, we'll add rude to his list of admirable attributes. We begin walking around each other in a circle, both measuring the other one up—both waiting to see who will strike first. I want to study him, see how he likes to fight. Taking a few punches is worth the ass kicking he'll receive in the end.
"You know what they say about arrogance?" I ask coyly.
He raises an eyebrow. "No. What do they say?"
"The more arrogant they are, the harder they fall," I reply.
Putting down his ax on one of the tables, his smile is cruel. "I'm going to take great pleasure in making you bleed as you beg for mercy."
A genuine laugh escapes my chest. This altercation could go one of two ways, we either make a narrow escape, or I get kidnapped. Regardless, it won't be easy for them. If it looks like I'll lose, then bargaining my surrender may be the only way for Merrie-Beth to escape.
Lunatic lunges for me, but I quickly move out of the way. My retreat does nothing to deter him. He moves his head from side to side, trying to pop his neck. Coming towards me again,he’s fast, and I purposely don't move out of the way in time. His fist connects with my mouth making me cry out in pain, and I have to wipe blood away from my lips with the back of my hand. The metallic taste on my tongue turns my stomach into knots and fuels the fire for vengeance deep in my gut.
"Is that all you got?" I mock.
