“What did ye discover?” William asked, moving away from Bram to the opening in the cave. Wind blew in, sweeping cold air over him. He looked down, but in the darkness, he could not see how far the jump was to the water below.

“I discovered a secret passage,” Bram said from behind him. He paused, and he and Grant both came to stand at the cave’s opening with William. Grant, knowing as William did that they would be jumping, raised the torch, and the two of them glanced at the steep drop as Bram continued to talk. “The passage leads to the Steward’s chamber, and it begins outside of the castle. It is how we can get to the Steward. What are we doing?” Bram finally asked.

William turned to his brother. “We’re jumping. ’Tis how we will escape.”

“Are ye mad?”

William and Grant exchanged a look. “Nay,” William said. “Ada said this was how we would escape. She had a feeling, and so far, all her feelings have been correct. Will ye trust me, Brother?”

Bram’s brows dipped together. “Do ye trust her?”

“Completely,” William responded, the truth of his words hitting him.

“Then let us jump,” Bram agreed.

And with that, Grant set the torch in a holder on the wall and the three of them leaped into the darkness below.
