‘She would have found out one day,’

Thanatos interrupted calmly. ‘It should

be with someone who cares for her.’

At this I stilled as though slapped.

‘You… both knew?’

The Truth

It was the first time

I had seen her

likethis.

Her anger was still there,

but her face flitted between fury

and something else.

Later I would learn,

that was called guilt.

And what would make

the river of hatred feel guilty?

This is the answer:

she knew what I was,

and shedid not tell me.

I took a deep breath.

‘How Could You Hide This From Me?’

My voice was so small and broken,

I barely recognized it as my own.

‘We were trying to protect you,’

Styx whispered softly.

‘It’s true, Hekate.’

My uncle Pallas’ voice filled the room.

He had been watching

from the doorway all this time.

He glared at Thanatos.
