“That’s what Vera said.”

“Because we’re both right.” Putting her arm around her shoulder, Cameron pulled Melanie close to her again. “For the record, I probably would have confronted him so you’re a better person than me.”

Melanie snorted a laugh. “Honestly, I have no idea what I’d say to him right now. I guess it’s a good thing I’m off the next few days so they should be gone by the time I’m back at work.”

“Very true.” They sat in silence for a moment as Melanie felt herself calming down. Cameron’s presence had a way of doing that to her. “You know what I’m going to do for you tonight? I’m going to make your favorite dinner and have a bottle of wine waiting for you when you get home.”

Melanie’s mind lingered on the wordhome. She’d begun to see Cameron’s house as her home the last few months and knew soon it would be her official home.

Before Melanie could tell her that, the door to the office opened again. Vera had three bottles of Powerade and handed one to each of them. Melanie noted how her cap was already loosened undoubtedly by Vera as a subtle way to show she cared about her. Pulling up a chair to the couch, Vera put her hand on Melanie’s knee.

“I got the rest of your shift covered, okay?”

“Vera, no, you don’t have to do that.”

“I know, but I did.” Vera winked at her. “Gotta take care of my favorite nurse.”

Melanie didn’t know how she got so lucky to have two of the best people in the world in her life. Both Vera and Cameron meant the world to her and Melanie knew they would always have her back. After saying goodbye to Vera, Cameron walkedMelanie out to her car. They hugged for a long time before Cameron had to get back to work.

“Text me when you get home, okay?”

“I will. Would it be okay if I picked the kids up from school today?”

Cameron looked shocked by her question but it quickly faded to love. “Of course. I know they’d love that.”

“Thanks. I’ll see you tonight.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

After another round of kisses, Melanie got into her car and headed home. She didn’t even change out of her scrubs as she collapsed onto the bed. Hank and Lucy cuddled up with her, clearly understanding something was wrong. Picking up her phone, Melanie hopped on social media to check out Rob’s profile.

Although she hadn’t been on the app in months, Rob and Janet were still in her recent searches. She clicked on Rob’s profile first and was surprisingly not shocked when she saw he had unfriended her and put his account to private.

“Bastard,” she mumbled to herself as she clicked over to Janet’s profile. Her profile picture was of her and Rob, but Melanie didn’t dare zoom in on it. Not when even the small picture showed Rob’s hand on her round belly. “Fucking bastard.”

Hot tears rolled down Melanie’s face as she quickly clicked buttons in order to delete her account. As she sat the phone down on the nightstand, she felt as if she had finally closed the book officially on her and Rob’s relationship.

About time.

Maybe seeing Rob and Janet at the hospital was what Melanie needed to fully move on from that part of her life. Feeling a relief she hadn’t felt before, Melanie drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 31

Cameron

Seeing Melanie so upset about Rob had hurt Cameron more than she had been prepared for. She hated seeing her sweet Melanie so upset over an asshole who clearly got his girlfriend pregnant at the same time he was asking his wife for a divorce. Cameron couldn’t imagine doing that to someone she loved. Knowing the pain Rob caused Melanie, even though the divorce was amicable, made Cameron want to march down to the postpartum floor and tell him exactly what she thought.

Melanie had told her that was a bad idea though.

And Cameron reluctantly knew that was true.

She’d spent the evening before playing board games with Melanie and the kids before cuddling with Melanie the rest of the night. Melanie kept talking through her array of feelings over Rob and Janet and their baby, and Cameron happily listened. Cameron would listen to Melanie talk about anything as long as she needed.

“I just hate we wasted so much time not being happy,” Melanie had sighed as she sank further into Cameron’s embrace as they cuddled on the couch.

“I know it’s easier said than done, but looking back is only going to keep causing your pain. Let’s look to our future together, okay? We get to have this,” she motioned between them, “for the rest of our lives.”
