“I thought you were off today.”
“I’m covering tonight.”
“Workaholic.”
“Yeah, well,” Melanie licked her lips as her eyes fluttered toward Cameron’s lips then back to her eyes, “it means I get to see you so I take that as a win.”
“You will, hmm?”
Slowly, Cameron wrapped her arm around Melanie’s waist and pulled her closer. She lingered a moment, studying her hazel eyes to make sure they were on the same page still. They hadn’t discussed how to approach their relationship at work post-divorce yet, let alone before the divorce was legal. Cameron wasn’t sure who would even care, but she would respect whatever Melanie needed.
And as Melanie leaned in, Cameron knew what she needed.
If only Melanie’s damn pager hadn’t gone off as soon as their lips were tantalizingly close.
“Dammit.” Melanie fumbled with the pager clipped to the pocket of her scrub top and turned it off. “I gotta go.”
“Wait.” Quickly, Cameron kissed her. It wasn’t anything sexy or to the quality Cameron hoped they would one day find. But for now, it would have to do. “Have a good night.”
“I will. Be safe going home. Kiss the kids for me.”
“I will.”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Cameron watched as Melanie turned and walked back to the door of the break room. She turned around before rounding the corner, blowing a kiss at Cameron before heading out of sight. Blushing, Cameron looked down at the coffee cup and saw Mel had drawn a heart on the white lid and put a small letter M beside it.
“See, nowthat’sthe subtle romantic gesture I was looking for earlier.” Cameron chuckled as she took a sip of her coffee that was prepared exactly how she liked it. “She’s good.”
Chapter 10
Melanie
Sitting in a poorly lit conference room at a lawyer’s office wasn’t Melanie’s ideal way to spend an afternoon. Melanie and Rob sat across from each other with their lawyers on either side of them while a court magistrate sat at the head of the table. Their lawyers had already discussed with them about all the division and who was getting what in the divorce. Blaire had told Melanie it would help move things along, especially since they didn’t have kids.
Melanie did her best to pay attention to everything the magistrate was saying, but her mind had already checked out. Although she knew she was lucky for the process to be going so smoothly and quickly, Melanie was also ready for it to be done.
And not just because she desperately wanted to start a relationship with Cameron.
That was only part of it.
Well, a big part of it.
But the other part was that she wanted to be able to close the Rob chapter of her story. They’d been married for so long that Melanie was eager to find out who she was without being Rob Sullivan’s wife. The last few years might have pulled them apart, but there was a time when Melanie truly loved Rob. However, with that part in her past, Melanie was ready for what her future held.
As the magistrate gave them a court date for a few weeks out, Melanie and the rest of the group shook hands as Rob and his lawyer left the room with the magistrate. Blaire stood, gathering her papers and laptop before putting a hand on Melanie’s shoulder.
“You okay?”
“Yeah,” Melanie smiled up at her, unsure how convincing her smile was. “It’s just a lot.”
“I know it is, but it’ll be over soon. I promise.”
“Thanks, Blaire.”
“You’re welcome.” She gently squeezed Melanie’s shoulder as she sat again. “I know it’s probably not my place to say this, but I’ll step out of lawyer-client mode and into talking to someone I’ve known for years.”
