Right answer.
“So I take it the road trip’s off?” Evie’s voice echoed in the empty apartment, and Kane and I jumped apart like children caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
“Um, yeah. I don’t think I’ll be going through with the move to… shit! The truck.” I leaped to my feet, ready to run down a truck that had left too long ago to catch.
“Relax, babe, I called and redirected them to my place about ten minutes ago. They were pissed, but you know, money talks and all that.”
“Evie—”
“Thank you, Evie. I’m so grateful for you Evie. You’re going to be my maid of honor Evie,” she singsonged, holding out her hand to see the ring.
“I knew you had a brain somewhere in that head,” she said, tossing a smirk at Kane before returning her attention to my hand.
“You may have to fight Allie for maid of honor, but as long as you’re there, I’ll be happy.” Evie hummed in a way that made me think Allie was in for the fight of her life if Evie didn’t get her way. I grinned, the idea that this was my new reality finally starting to settle over me.
“We need to celebrate,” Evie announced, looking around as though expecting someone to appear with champagne. Hell, maybe she did expect it.
“What about pizza?” I offered.
“Done.”
With a full heart, I walked out of my old apartment for the last time with my new fiancé, and an old friend. As we made our way down to street level, my cell rattled in my hand with an incoming call.
“Darcy, this is Pete Myers from the Swenton Daily. How ya doin’?” The male voice belted over my greeting as I clicked onto the call.
“I’m well—”
“Great to hear, great to hear. Listen, I’ve heard on the grapevine Kane Bryson has a story to tell that my paper will want to run, but he’s insisting you write it. You want my opinion? Risky move after what you pulled in the Times, but that’s his call. How’d you like to take the story on freelance? I’m happy to discuss a fair fee. Come in to the Daily office tomorrow and we’ll talk. Nine a.m. Got it? Great talk, then.”
Before I could thank him for the opportunity, the call had disconnected.
Stunned, I stepped out of the apartment building and onto the sidewalk where Kane and Evie waited for me. Wrapping an arm around me as soon as I was close enough, Kane tipped his head toward me, concern creasing his features. “Are you okay? What was that about?”
“Did you get me a job?” I asked weakly. His grin was triumphant as it spread across his face, taking him from attractive to superhuman in an instant. God, I loved this man. I couldn’t believe how close I’d come to ruining everything by running.
“It was past time I stopped making you do everything on your own and started manning up.”
Evie groaned behind us. “I forgot how sickening you two were when you’re on the same page. I’ll leave you to it and wait for the official engagement party. Laters.” She waved and peeled off toward her car, parked two spots further down the street from where we stood.
Wrapping my arms around Kane, I lifted onto my toes until he caught the hint and bent down to meet me half-way. “How hungry are you, really?” I asked, flicking my tongue against his earlobe.
“Ravishing. We should go back to my place so I can eat.” The suggestion in his voice made my blood run hot.
“It’s a shame Coach didn’t hang around,” Kane muttered, fishing his cell out of his pocket and pulling up his Uber app.
“I don’t think I want him knowing the things I want to do to you,” I muttered, discreetly slipping my hand between us to cup his crotch. Kane’s breath left him in a deep groan, his hips rocking into my palm, even as he typed furiously on his phone to organize the fastest way home. The second the booking was confirmed, Kane tucked his cell into his pocket and pinned me to the side of my former building. “Fuck, I want to feel you around me right now,” he growled in my ear, grinding into me in a way that made me pant. We were in public. In broad daylight. And I didn’t give a shit as my skin started to buzz and sensation bloomed in my lower belly. “Kane,” I whimpered as he slipped his hand down the back of my jeans, taking a handful of my ass to work me tighter against him.
“Yo, are you Bryson?” I froze, glancing over Kane’s shoulder at the Mercedes pulled up to the curb.
“Kane,” I said, my voice nothing but breath as his lips moved down my throat.
He growled. Actually growled at me, and made like he would ignore the guy until I pulled him up by the ears and pressed a sweet kiss to his mouth.
“Take me home so I can get naked.”
Kane
I wason a hair trigger the entire ride home. My erection throbbed with its own heartbeat behind my sweats, my swimwear mostly keeping shit decent, but the fact Darcy slapped my hand away every time I reached for her in the back of the car made the pain even sweeter.
