Tyton got up too. “I’d offer that you stay with us, but the Motherlands would probably accuse us of kidnapping you and I’d prefer to stay alive.”

Wilma laughed at his joke while I sighed with relief since part of me had been terrified that he wouldn’t let me go again.

Swinging a hand to the staircase, he gestured for me to go first. “Come on, pixie, I’ll take you to the wall.”

“I didn’t climb the wall.”

“All right. But I’ll escort you to wherever you crossed the border then.” He took a step toward the exit, but stopped when I said:

“I would rather you didn’t know.”

First his back stiffened and then he turned to me and walked over to stand in front of me.

I wanted to step back but the couch was behind me.

Stand your ground. Don’t show fear.

Tyton and I stood watching each other in a silent power struggle. My head was leaning back to meet his eyes, which were shining with stubborn resolve. I was a strong person, but this man exuded confidence, power, and danger in a way that I hadn’t encountered before. He wouldn’t take no for an answer, but neither would I.

CHAPTER 10

Don’t come

Tyton

“You might as well tell me since there’s no way in hell that I’m letting you out of my sight until I know you’re back on your side of the border.”

For someone like me who was raised to protect women it was annoying as fuck that Devina refused my protection.

She tried to keep her face impassive as to not reveal anything, but it wasn’t that hard to guess.

“Look, there aren’t that many options and since you insist that you didn’t climb the wall, I assume that you swam around it.

The subtle widening of her eyes told me I was right.

“Fine. I’ll take you to the beach then.”

Raising her chin up, she crossed her arms. “Maybe, I crawled under the wall.”

“You’re too clean for that and the edges of your hair are still damp, so I’m gonna go with the swimming.”

“I got myself here and I can get back without your help.”

Leaning closer, I used a low firm tone. “I’m not asking you, Devina. I’m telling you.”

This would have been enough to make Wilma or any Nwoman give in, but Devina just turned on her heels and walked down the stairs and outside.

Wilma rushed after her and I took the stairs in three long steps.

“Devina, don’t worry, you’ll be safe with my brother,” my sister insisted.

The way Devina arched her left eyebrow, giving Wilma an incredulous look, made my throat feel dry as fuck. Anytime now she would tell my sister how I’d manhandled her when I found her snooping around outside our house.

But Devina didn’t rat me out.

Instead she walked over and took Wilma’s hands. “I have to go now, but if any man ever mistreats you…” Devina didn’t finish the sentence but Wilma still nodded in understanding.

When she turned and began walking away from us, it sunk in that she was serious about leaving without my protection.
