“And you gave her a choice?”
I scowled at him. “You didn’t give Laura a choice?”
“No, of course not. She’s my wife and I fought for her; I took her on our wedding night and I certainly didn’t ask for her permission.”
“Did she fight you?”
He snorted. “That would have been futile, she’s a tiny thing compared to me.”
“Are you saying that you raped her?”
“Of course not. Laura was raised properly. She gave herself to me like a proper wife should.”
I threw a meatball in the air and caught it with my mouth. “Yeah, but Christina isn’t like Laura and unless I want to scar her for life, I have to take it slow with her.”
Magni looked over at the women. “I told Laura to teach Christina about our ways, I’m sure she’s putting in a good word for you.”
I followed his gaze to the two women and hoped he was right.
When we got back to the mansion late in the afternoon, Christina wanted to take a shower so I placed guards outside her room and went to find Khan to have a word with him.
“I want to take Christina home to my place,” I said.
Khan sat in front of his chessboard and pointed to a free chair.
“I don’t wanna play.”
“Afraid of losing?” he said without looking up.
“Chess isn’t my game.”
“True, but beating you in chess is so much fun.”
“Did you hear me? I want to take my wife home.”
“I heard you,” he lifted his gaze, “but my answer is no.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m intrigued with her and I like having you both here.”
“But you hardly talk to her.”
“Ahh, and yet I learn so much from her.” The smug smile on his face made my spine tingle. It was a sure sign that Khan was up to no good. With my hands forming into fists I sank down on the chair and leaned forward. “Tell me that you’re not tapping our room?”
Khan raised his head and looked straight at me. “Of course I am,” he said without any sign of shame.
My voice rose, “You’ve heard everything?”
“And seen everything too,” he added.
I pounded my fist down on his chessboard, making all the pieces fly in the air.
Khan calmly leaned back in his seat and pointed to the board. “Look what you did, Boulder.”
“You have no right to invade my privacy like that.”
“Do not tell me what I can or cannot do,” he said in a hard tone. “You’re my friend but I will not tolerate you dictating to me.”
