Before we wind up with a smackdown on our hands, Knight steps in.

“Enough you two. This is a hospital. You’re worse than naughty children.”

An unrepentant grin plastered on his face, Scooter takes a seat without another word. Returning his grin, I shake my head and sit down next to him. I’ve only just put my ass down when a doctor approaches us.

“Are you the one who came in with Ms. Traeger?” he asks, and I feel my mouth go dry.

“Yes, I am. Is she all right?” I ask.

“She will be. Took a bit of a knock to the head, but she’ll be fine. She’s awake and asking for a Jessen?”

“That’s me,” I reply.

“Ms. Traeger will be going upstairs shortly, but you have a minute to see her if you’d like.”

“Thanks, Doc. Appreciate it.”

With nothing more than a nod, he takes his leave. Gripping Agatha’s purse in my hand, I go over to the cubicle she’s in.

She’s lying with her eyes closed, and I take a moment to study her. The raw graze on her cheek is a harsh red in stark contrast to the paleness of her skin. I move to the side of the bed, and Agatha opens her eyes.

“Hi.” Her voice is scarcely above a whisper. “Sorry about the rather abrupt end to our lunch outing.”

“Me too. Sorry I didn’t spot the asshole.”

“Not your fault. Besides, it happened so quickly I don’t think even you’d have been able to stop it. I saw him and still didn’t have time to react.”

Her words don’t make me feel any better, but I leave it at that.

“One of the officers from the scene dropped your purse off. She thought you might need it.”

“That was thoughtful of her.”

“Sorry to interrupt folks, but we need to move Ms. Traeger up to her ward.” The orderly releases the brakes on Agatha’s bed, then pushes it from the head.

“I just need to let my friends know where we’re going, and I’ll be right behind you. Which floor?”

He replies, and I dash over to where the guys are waiting.

“That’s Indie’s floor,” Knight replies. “And she’s on duty right now. Agatha’ll be in good hands. You go ahead; we’ll be right there.”

Sprinting down the hall, I make it to the bank of elevators just as the doors slide open. I hop in with Agatha and the orderly, taking her hand in mine as we ride up to the correct floor. With a muted ding, the doors slide open, and I see Indigo heading our way, her cell pressed to her ear.

“Yeah, I see them. They’ve literally just arrived. See you shortly,” I hear her say before she hangs up. Offering me a smile, she then turns to Agatha. “Hi. I hear you’ll be spending a couple of days here with me. Let’s go get your settled, shall we?”

“Agatha, allow me to officially introduce you to Indigo Jones. Indie, this is Agatha Traeger. Indie is Knight’s significant other.”

Indigo gives her a broad smile. “Tyrone, Ms. Traeger’s in fourteen.” Once again turning her attention on Agatha, she continues, “We’ve put you in a private room so you can recuperate in peace.”

“Thanks,” is all she says, looking overwhelmed.

When we reach the door of her room, I give the hand I’m holding a gentle squeeze. “I’ll be just down the hall. I’ll see you once you’re settled and Indie’s had a chance to do her thing.”

“Okay.” Before I can let go of her hand, she tugs on mine to get my attention. “Thank you. I appreciate you staying with me.”

I give her a chin lift, then leave them to get on with it while I go wait in the small waiting room I remember from Knight’s hospital stay.

I don’t even get a chance to put my ass in a chair when the guys come hurrying in, a look of apology on Knight’s face.
