‘I’ve seen it take place and hopefully that will happen with this other thing, too.’

‘Right there you are then. I’ll hold the place for the next few days. Just ping me when you know.’

‘Will do. Thanks again.’

Daisy made her way back out through the bakery, the smell of bread and cinnamon buns curling in the air as she passed the back kitchen. Back at home, she tapped Miles’s name and pressed to call. It only rang once.

‘Daise.’

‘Hi.’

‘Hi. Everything okay?’

‘Yes, yes. So, I popped down to see Chloe. She’s in charge of the bookings for Holly and Xian’s holiday cottages.’

‘Oh?’

‘I asked her if there were any holiday lets available and there are. A really lovely one, actually. It’s over by the Sugar Wharf. It’s one of Holly and Xian’s. Apparently, there was a cancellation, it’s four weeks, so it’s perfect really. There aren’t any steps at the front. You won’t know about their cottages, but the interiors are something else. I think your mum will love it. To be honest, it’s the best place to convalesce.’

‘Sounds perfect.’

‘Let me send you the link to the site.’

Daisy sent the link and waited. ‘Do you think it will suit?’

‘It’ll suit, for sure. She’ll love it. Who wouldn’t like that cottage? It looks like someone painted it.’

‘So, shall I get back to her and tell her you’ll take it?’ Daisy asked.

‘Yes.’

‘What about the flat?’

‘I’ve emailed them.’

‘Oh, okay, right.’

‘I’ve missed you.’

‘I’ve missed you too.’

‘I feel wrong without you. I still keep thinking I’ll turn around and you’ll be there, making tea or telling me off for the state of my fridge.’

Daisy closed her eyes for a second. ‘Okay, so I’ll let Chloe know and I’ll see if I can pop over and have a look at it.’

‘I’m sure it will be fine. Anything new on the GayesBooks thing?’

‘Nothing other than that Holly and Xian have been to see the estate agent, according to Chloe.’

‘Right. No news is good news...’

‘Hope so.’

‘I have to go; I have a meeting. We’ll have that talk I said about when we’re in and settled.’

‘I’ll message you later.’ Daisy swallowed. Well, that was that then. There it was: a tiny, ordinary conversation, tucked into a regular old day that shifted something big. Miles was coming with his mum and he meant business. ‘Alright then, I’ll tell Chloe it’s a yes.’

‘And Daise?’
