“No, I’d like the company. I’m just down this street and left on the next.”
He fell into stride beside her. “Nice to live where it’s pleasant weather for evening walks. Pretty chilly back home now. I live in Vermont.”
“It is nice. Even summer nights are okay for me, though some people complain about the humidity. I think the gulf stirs the air enough, and we often have a good breeze.” She smiled. “I love living here.”
“It’s a nice little town.”
“It is. Has everything I need. And the people are friendly. My family is here. It’s just… nice.”
“Not to mention you have ice cream available whenever you want it.” He grinned at her.
“There’s that, too.” A smile tugged at her lips as she recalled how he’d relished his peach pie with ice cream.
“I seriously remember how wonderful that ice cream was from back in my childhood. Made quite the impression.”
She laughed. “I guess so. That was a long time ago.”
They paused in front of her apartment building and stood under the streetlight. “Thanks for letting me join you on your walk home. Enjoyed the company.” An easy smile played at the corners of his mouth.
“I enjoyed the company, too.”
“I better head out or Violet will be sending out a search party.”
“You know the way back to the resort from here?” Moonbeam wasn’t a big town, but its streets wove this way and that and sometimes got confusing.
He nodded, gave her another smile, and headed back the way they had come. She watched him go until he faded into the distance.
Rob seemed like a nice guy. And it was kind of him to help his sister out with the resort. He had a nice quick smile, too. An easy smile. And his warm brown eyes twinkled when he teased his sister. And even with his protests, she could tell he adored her.
A couple came out of the building and said hi, and she decided she couldn’t just stand there all night thinking about the newcomer to town, now could she? She slipped past them and into the lobby.
She couldn’t wait to get up to her apartment, make a cup of tea, and curl up with a good book. A perfect end to the day as far as she was concerned.
Chapter 7
Heather had taken to dropping by Jesse’s a couple mornings a week to have coffee with him. Or so that was her excuse. She really loved seeing Blake off to school.
Blake came into the kitchen where she and Jesse were sipping coffee. He dropped his school bag on the floor. “Hey, Heather.”
“Morning.” She took in every detail. His damp hair from his shower, the sleep that still clung to his face as if trying to lure him back to bed.
“Can I make you breakfast?” Jesse rose.
“Nah, I’m just going to grab a granola bar. I’m heading to school early to meet someone to work on some stuff.”
“That would be Angela?” Heather asked.
He stared at her. “Yes… but…” Then he laughed. “Emily talked to you, huh?”
“She might have mentioned something.”
He sunk down on a chair across from her. “Emily says Angela likes me. She says she can tell.”
“Do you like her?”
“Maybe. Yeah, I… I do.” He nodded.
“You going to ask her out?” Heather looked over the top of her coffee cup, studying his face carefully.
