She glanced up at him. And just what did he mean by that?

Chapter 4

Donna glanced at her watch late that evening after dropping the rest of the Parker women at their homes after the gala. A faint knock came from the front door.

At this hour?

She peeked out the window and smiled.

Barry.

She hurried to open the door.

“I hope it’s not too late. I saw you come home and…I’m a bit wired from the gala. Thought you might be too?”

“Come in. How about I make us some chamomile tea?”

“That sounds wonderful, but first—”He stepped inside, took her hand, and drew her close.“I’ve been wanting to kiss you all night.”He leaned down and kissed her gently.

She wound her arms around his neck, holding him close to her. Her pulse raced through her, warming her. Her breath came in jagged little sips for oxygen. He finally stopped kissing her and she leaned against him, feeling his heartbeat. Her heart pounded against his.

“Now, I guess if I can get up the willpower to let you go, we could have the tea.”

She laughed softly.“Yes, in a minute.”

He held her tightly.“You feel very nice in my arms.”

She circled her arms around his waist, pulling closer. It did feel nice just encircled in his strong arms, in the stillness of the night. The stillness that was so welcome after the noise and hubbub of the gala.

She reluctantly pulled away from him.“Let me put the teakettle on. I’ll make tea and we can go sit out on the point. Look at the stars. Unwind a bit.”

“Sounds great.”

The familiar actions of making the tea comforted her, and she did the steps automatically while he lounged against the counter. They took their tea outside and settled in the Adirondack chairs.

“Ah, this is nice.”Barry stretched out his long legs. He still had on part of his gala outfit, but he’d lost the jacket, tie, and his shoes. She smiled at the eclectic mixture of dressed up and casual.

She set her tea on the side table and pulled off her shoes.“Ah, that’s better.”

“I lost mine the minute I walked in the door to my house tonight. We must have stood for hours at the gala.”

“We did. But I had a fabulous time. And Evelyn was thrilled everything turned out so nice.”

“She did an excellent job.”

She picked up her cup and took a sip of the soothing brew, then turned to him.“What do you think was going on between Delbert and Camille?”

“I have no idea. He said they’d broken up. But she sure wasn’t acting that way.”

“But did you see her after Delbert led her out of the ballroom? She came back later and wow, did she look angry. And she was flirting outrageously with every man she talked to after that.”

“I’m pretty sure it’s over between them. At least in Delbert’s view.”

“Ah, well, I probably shouldn’t be gossiping about it, anyway.”She shook her head. She was no fan of Camille’s, but still it didn’t feel right to gossip about her.“But that Cassandra Cabot woman was fascinating, wasn’t she?”

“She was charming.”

“So fun that she and Del knew each other from when they were young.”She paused, wondering if she should add her thoughts.
