His hand was wrapped around the back of my neck while he rubbed his hard dick against me, tongue fucking me for the whole town to see. Hearing a whistle, he pulled back, pecking my lips softly as he smiled.
“Drive safe. I’ll be right behind you.”
Devlin opened my door and leaned in, helping me hook my seatbelt before closing the door. It made me feel protected and loved, but a little humiliated. I wasn’t a child, and the fact that he felt the need to track me down and chastise me for stopping without permission had me suddenly defensive.
I watched as he opened the car parked next to mine and I backed out of the space. He followed close behind me the three blocks home, parking in his spot in the underground garage. I was gathering the chili and homemade bread from the backseat when he knocked on my door.
Opening the door, he took the containers from me and held my hand as we walked to the open elevator. My arms were crossed defensively, and I leaned against the sidewall, my gaze directed at the floor. Devlin was watching me and when the door opened, I tried to grab the containers from him.
The inexplicable need to be alone was overwhelming and I wanted to cry in the privacy of my apartment. Taking my hand, he exited and walked us to my front door before turning his head to me. He finally spoke with a small smirk on his face.
“Are you going to unlock the door, or do I need to use my key?”
“Of course, you have a key.”
The words tumbled from my lips as I opened my apartment and he followed me inside, locking the door behind us. Dropping my keys on the side table, I took the containers from him and sulked while I put the food away. Devlin stepped behind me as I closed the fridge and he spun me until my back pushed against the cool metal.
I brought my eyes to him and he reached down, tucking a lock of hair behind my ear. “I’m not trying to rule your life, Elise. But when you didn’t come straight home, I got worried.”
“I don’t understand what the big deal is.” I knew I was being petulant toward him, but he was making me feel like a child.
“The big deal is someoneapproached you yesterday, and I don’t know who he is. Until I find him and figure out his motives, I’m going to be more demanding. I told you lamb, I not a nice guy. I’m going to react harshly when I think you may be in danger. It’s my job to protect you and if I don’t know where you are, how can I do my job?”
I hadn’t thought about the crazy man from the park when I left my parents. I was focused on my normal day, my normal life, and getting back to Devlin. The dark savior who had finally revealed himself. The strange man and Devlin’s reaction to him had a wave of fear washing over me.
“Am I in danger?” I asked, my lip trembling.
He brought his lips to mine and kissed me with a soft embrace. I wrapped my arms around his neck, still wedged between the fridge and his body. His strong hand gripped my cheek and neck, his thumb brushing against my skin.
“You are never in danger, my precious. I overreacted back at the bar, but I would do it again to show him you’re mine. Promise me, if you have to change your itinerary, you’ll let me know.”
“I promise.”
Devlin wrapped his arms around my waist and picked me up, carried me to the couch and deposited me on the soft leather. He grabbed my laptop from the counter and handed it to me.
“Make your order and I’ll have someone pick it up for you.”
I nodded and accepted that until he could find out who the man from the park was, I would be monitored closely. I loved the thought thathe needed to know where I was every minute of the day. I had the same need for him, and it was growing, surpassing love and becoming something more. Something all-encompassing.
I was clicking through the website, adding my weekly needs to the list as Devlin sat with me, observing me with appraising eyes. I needed to deal with my promise to Chuck and it terrified me to ask him. A part of me was fearful he would become mad and lash out again. Chewing my lip, I hesitated to speak as I submitted my order.
Setting the laptop on the coffee table, I turned to him. “I . . . I need for you to get . . .”
He pulled his phone out and asked, “How much?”
With a slight smile, I explained what I needed him to get and he sent out a text to someone. “It’ll be here soon.”
“I’m sorry.” Casting my eyes to my lap, I entwined my fingers and felt the guilt overwhelm me.
Devlin reached under my chin and turned my face toward his. “It’s my job to take care of you. Chuck is important to you and if he needs something, I’m happy to help. I’m not mad, lamb. I promise. But I won’t allow you to become a walking zombie. If I see it’s becoming a crutch, I’ll take it away.”
Feeling the need to be closer to him, I climbed into his lap and rested my cheek against his chest, his heartbeat a comforting sound. Devlin rubbed by back and hummed a tune that was awakening something deep in my mind, but far enough out of reach that I shook it off. The adrenaline seeped out of me with every note he hummed, and I let myself sink deeper against him, content in Devlin’s arms.
