“But you said yes to my one night?” I ask, and immediately regret it when his eyes flash with a passionate heat that sizzles along my skin.
“I said yes toyou. And I have no intention of keeping it just one night. That was your rule, and one I have every intention of getting you to break.”
He finally tears his gaze from me, and I force myself to take a deep breath and retrieve the air that he stole from me. This road trip just got a whole hell of a lot more complicated. I’m determined to stand my ground, though. This changes nothing.
We will show up at the event, I’ll get my account, and after a good night’s sleep inseparaterooms, I’ll get home to Bee. Everything will return to normal…a safe, happy, no chance of getting my heart broken…normal.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
MILES
“What do you mean there is only one room left?” I watch Olivia desperately try to make a vacant room appear as I try to keep the amusement off my face.
After we dropped her jeep off with Sam, he pointed us to a small bed and breakfast down the street. Apparently, there is a big music festival going on this weekend, and everything is booked solid.
Olivia calls it bad luck. I call it God giving me my unanswered prayers.
“I’m sorry,” the guy says behind the counter as he looks down at the receipt for the room I just paid for…theonlyroom left in this entire place. “This is the only room available. The festival has us booked solid for the weekend. If it weren’t for this last-minute cancellation, we would have had nothing for you. Unless you want to drive an hour out of town…this is it.”
“I’m more than happy to share my room if you ask me nicely.” I grin when Olivia shoots me daggers over her shoulder.
“I’m so glad you find this amusing,” she throws at me, grabbing her purse off the counter with more force thanneeded. “Fine. I don’t have a choice if I want to make it there on time.”
“Perfect,” the older guy behind the counter smiles at us. “It all worked out.” He turns and takes the last set of keys off the hook. I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a place where they have actual keys instead of plastic ones. “You guys are in lucky room thirteen,” he winks at me as he hands me the keys. “Good luck,” he says, chuckling quietly.
“Thanks,” I grin, taking them. “I’m going to need it.” I walk over to where Olivia is looking at the pictures on the wall. “All set. We are this way.” I lead her through the living room and down the hall.
“I feel like we’ve stepped back in time,” she whispers behind me as we walk past antique furniture and floral wallpaper. “It reminds me of my grandma’s house when I was younger.”
“Let’s just hope whoever’s grandma used to own this place isn’t still around, lingering in these hallways.” I shudder as goosebumps appear on my arms.
“Is the big, tatted guy afraid of ghosts?” Her eyebrow lifts as laughter fills her eyes.
“Not afraid,” I say, putting the key in and opening the door. “I just prefer not to share my space with things I can’t see.” I look around the room and take in the decor. It’s similar to the rest of the place with old wooden floors and faded throw rugs. An antique dresser sits along one wall, and it matches the two nightstands on either side of the bed…a very small bed.
“This can’t be right,” she whispers in a panicked voice. “It’s barely a full-size bed. Who the hell rents out rooms with mattresses that small?”
“Maybe it’s for single guests traveling alone,” I shrug, finding this very amusing. I’ve seen the way she’s been fighting this attraction between us all day. Her little plan of staying far away from me is coming to a screeching halt.
Setting her bag on the white quilt, she walks over to the bathroom and peers inside. “At least we can freshen up before we head over to the winery. Do you mind if I go first?” She asks, turning back toward me. “I just want to rinse this sweat off me before I change into my dress.”
“No, go ahead. I’ll go next.” I peel my sweaty shirt off my body, and I feel her eyes watching my every move. Sitting on the bed, I lean against the headboard and cross my ankles.
I finally meet her gaze, and she’s gripping the doorframe like it’s the only thing keeping her up. Flicking my lip ring with my tongue, I bring it in and mess with it as I watch her with hooded eyes. I know I’m playing dirty, but I can’t help myself.
Patience is not my strong suit, but she needs to make the next move. She’s clearly trying to stick to her guns about this whole friendship thing when every part of her screams otherwise.
“We could just share a shower. It would be much quicker and saves water,” I grin, as she shakes her head as if coming out of a daze, narrowing her eyes at me.
“Not going to happen…friend.” She shuts the door, but not before I see her cheeky smile appear. I don’t know who’s suffering more with this dangerous game we're playing of hard to get.
Adjusting my pants, I try to get comfortable, but all I can picture is her naked body in that shower, a mere ten feet from me.
Closing my eyes, I try to wipe away the images of bubbles sliding down her breasts and pooling between her legs. The pressure of the water changes as the stream gets quieter. A soft moan has my eyes shooting open.
Is she?
She’s getting off to the shower nozzle.
