Of course, my mom’s asking about me. I might be having a baby today, but as she always tells me, I’m still her kid.
Me >> Nervous but I’m good. Glad she isn’t hurting anymore.
Mom >> Sending you a big hug. I’m proud of you.
She can’t be here right now because of work, but she’s going to come visit in a few weeks once everything settles a little bit. She met Sienna over FaceTime a few weeks ago, and the two of them instantly hit it off.
Me >> Thanks, love you.
Mom >> Love you too.
“Is that your mom?” Warren asks from beside me on the slightly uncomfortable couch on the side of the room.
I look up, realizing the nurse isn’t in the room anymore. “Yeah, she was just checking on me.”
He laughs quietly. “My mom’s been blowing up my phone. I keep reminding her this isn’t her first grandkid. She should know it doesn’t happen right away.”
“I guess we should be grateful all of our parents have been so supportive,” I say. I bring my hand to my mouth, stifling a chuckle. “Even if they are a little overbearing at times.”
“Yeah,” he says, attempting to quiet his own laugh. Grayson laughs quietly from where he’s leaning against the wall. “Our girl is going to have more grandparents than she can keep track of.”
“More parents, too,” I add, laughing to myself. “She’s never going to be able to get away with anything.”
“I’m sure she’ll figure out a way.” Sienna’s voice draws all our gazes over to her.
We all walk over to her bed. “Sorry if we woke you up,” I say.
She shakes her head. “Waking up to the three of you talking about our daughter is pretty perfect,” she says, smiling.
Grayson runs his hand down the side of her face. “How are you feeling?”
“Better now.” She sighs and kisses his palm.
The door opens slowly. Sienna’s face lights up.
“Mom,” she says on an exhale.
Warren and I step to the side, giving Ellen room to get to Sienna. She pats Warren and I on the shoulder before leaning down to give her daughter a hug.
“We’re all going to go get some coffee,” Grayson says. He leans down, giving Sienna a kiss on the cheek. “We’ll be back soon, love.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE
Sienna
“You’re ready, mama,”the nurse says. “Your doctor should be here soon, then we’ll start pushing.”
“Really?” I ask. My voice is raspy with disbelief. It seems like I’ve been doing this forever, but I know it’s only been about twelve hours.
The nurse tosses her gloves in the trash, getting some hand sanitizer from the dispenser near the door. “It’s time,” she says, smiling. “July eighth seems like a perfect birthday to me.”
With that, she walks back out into the hallway.
A strong hand squeezes mine.Grayson.I forgot he was standing next to me, holding my hand.
“It’s okay. You’re almost done,” he says soothingly.
I swallow thickly as Tucker and Warren step up on the other side of the bed.
