She waved a hand, unwinding a scarf from around her neck. “I feel better to be back.” She eyed the scarf in his hands. “Ew. What is that?”

“A lost scarf,” he said, holding it forward. “I thought it might be yours.”

Lucy made a face. “Absolutely not, and I’m kind of insulted you thought that.”

Claire forced a smile. “We’d better eat before the food gets cold.”

“Right.” Lucy nodded, pulling out her room key and opening the door. “See you later, Chip.”

“See you,” he said. He was about to walk away when he stopped himself. “I thought she was already here?”

He knows. He knows.“No, no. I knew she was on her way.”

“Ah.”

They stared at each other for a moment, Claire feeling the sweat forming on her back. She hated lying. She was about to speak again when Chip’s phone rang.

He excused himself. “It’s Chip.”

Claire watched his face as he listened intently.

“No, Addie, that’s okay.” He switched ears. “Of course, you should rent them a room. We have nothing to hide.”

Her stomach tightened. That didn’t sound good.

Chip let out a sigh. “They can request a room but not to be next to a particular guest. You know what, I’m still here. I’ll stop by.”

Once he hung up, she asked, “Is everything okay?”

He scratched his head. “Those FBI agents are back, at the front desk. Making requests, apparently. That’s one thing Gigi is good for.”

Claire let out a nervous laugh. “The FBI?”

“No. Denying requests.” He started walking down the hall.

Claire followed. “I’ll come with you.”

They walked in silence until they reached the lobby.

Agent McCoy waved when he saw her. “Miss Cooke. I didn’t expect to see you here so late.”

She flashed a smile. “How are you, gentleman?”

“We’re doing well,” Agent Alvarez said. “Enjoying our time on the island.”

Addie spoke, her voice small. “They asked for a list of all of the guests.”

“Just to make sure we’re not staying next to any criminals,” Agent McCoy said, winking at Claire.

She was getting sick of this guy. He had nothing on her, but he wouldn’t stop poking around, trying to rattle her.

Claire smiled back. “That’s not a service that we offer, unfortunately. You can try one of the other resorts on the island, or perhaps on the mainland?”

He let out a laugh. “No, I think we’ll stay here for a bit. I like the views.”

Claire walked around the front desk and Addie stepped aside. “One room or two?”

McCoy and Alvarez looked at each other, then Agent Alvarez spoke. “Two, please.”
