“I must admit,” he said, leaning in closer, “that this is one of the finest forgeries that I’ve ever seen.”

Lynn titled her head. “I’m sorry?”

He turned to her and spoke in his normal voice. “Our tests show it’ll pass as undetectable…”

Her eyes brightened, and her mouth drifted open before she responded. “I thought that was you, but then I also thought that I was losing my mind.”

“And here I’d decided that my disguise was pretty good.”

“I’d say that the department is losing its touch.” She looked him up and down. “Yes, I can honestly see right through it.”

He chuckled and casually looked over his shoulder. No one was within earshot, and the murmur of voices drowned everyone else out. “Well, that might be because I retired a few months ago.”

She crossed her arms. “That makes more sense. But you’re never fully off the job, eh?”

“You know how it is.” He stood for a moment, forgetting what he’d wanted to say. She hadn’t aged a day, though it must’ve been five years since he’d seen her last. She still had the same brilliant blue eyes.

A woman stepped in behind Mike. He cleared his throat, lowering his voice again. “Perhaps we can talk more later?”

She smiled. “I’d like that. When?”

Another pair of women were rapidly approaching. Mike walked away as he said, “I’ll find you.”
