“What did you make?”
“Stew. I have some bread to eat with it.”
“That sounds so good. I could smell it from the bathroom.” Walt chuckled.
Walt placed the food on the table, and we sat down. Colt came into view, sitting in the chair across from me. I could feel Colt’s eyes on me, stealing sneaky glances when he knew his dad wasn’t looking. I noticed how his lips were turned to one side and teasing me in a way that sent shivers down my spine, causing my whole body to tremble.
“So, Daisy, what do you think?”
“It’s very good, Walt. Where did you learn to cook likethis?”
“My mother and grandmother taught me. They always made sure to teach my brother and I things. They wanted us to be able to cook if we never found a woman to put up with us.” We both laughed.
“Did they say that?”
“Oh, yes, they did.” We laughed again.
As we finished our meal, Walt walked over to the sink to do the dishes, and I helped him clear the table. Colt was now standing, leaning against the wall that went into the kitchen- the same one he had pressed me against during one of our hot and steamy make out sessions.
There had been so much to do on the ranch today, but I didn’t seem to mind it. I was with Colt, and any time spent with him was always a good time. I liked getting to see how calm he was during the snake incident. I was a nervous wreck, but he was the calm to my storm.
Walt finished the dishes and said he was going to bed after the long day. I’m sure he was even more tired than me, as he is older.
The sun had now set, and Colt and I settled into the living room. Colt plopped on the couch beside me. He brushed his hand against mine, moving his eyes up to meet my own. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I laid my head on his shoulder.
“Hey, Daisy. Do you want to step outside for a minute?” His voice was low, but I caught a smile on his face.
We walked outside, hand in hand, and I felt the slight coolness of the air against my body. The porch creaked beneath our feet as we leaned against the wooden railing. The stars were out and shining bright, casting a glow in the night sky. The view was breathtaking. Colt turned to me.
“Is it just me or does it kind of feel like we’re in a movie?”His voice was still barely above a whisper.
“It does…like a secret romance movie.”
We leaned closer and I could feel the tension growing between us. He had a warmth radiating off him, and I knew his arms would feel like a comforting blanket wrapped around me. He brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. The simplicity of the touch sent shivers down my spine. Our gazes locked, and everything else faded away.
“Daisy, I know we are keeping this a secret, but I can’t help how I feel about you.” A lump caught in my throat, and I was unable to find words to reply to him.
Before I could find the words to say, Colt leaned in closer. His lips brushed against mine in a soft, passionate kiss. He had a hand on each side of my face. The kiss deepened as he pulled me in closer to him, and all my thoughts and worries faded away.
The kiss felt right.
His touch felt right.
My feelings for Colt felt right.
Being with Colt felt right.
We pulled away, our foreheads resting against each other. We were both breathless. I heard the faint sound of the TV from inside, and I was reminded that we needed to be careful about our secret rendezvous.
“We should go get some sleep.” I knew that’s what we needed to do.
“Yeah, it’s been a long day.” He kissed me on the cheek one last time before we made our way into the house.
I hoped our secret was just the beginning, and I couldn’t wait to see where it would lead.
