My throat tightens. “Investigation for what? I thought it was okay for a professor to date a student as long as it's been reported first.”
“I think we both know that isn't the case in this situation and I would much rather discuss all the remaining details in person.”
I shake my head, at a loss for words. Why is Jamie being investigated if he did what he was supposed to do? “I don't understand.”
“I'm guessing you haven't spoken with your friend today. He came in here awfully worried about you.”
“My friend?”
“A Mr. Luca who also works with you at The Seville.”
“But Luca doesn't even know where I go to school, why would he…” my words trail off and I remember the look Rhys had in his eyes when his gaze fell on me, and now I know why he looked so familiar. It's not because of the pictures in Jamie’s house. It's because he was at the club Saturday night. I remember the way he watched me with dark confused eyes as I danced on stage. I didn't give it much thought at the time because I didn't recognize him. His hair was shorter, and he wasn’t smiling like in the pictures.
“Mr. Jenson? Are you still there?”
I shake off the memories. “Yes, and I will meet you tomorrow and clear up all this confusion. Does ten-thirty a.m. work for you?”
“That sounds perfect. I will see you then, and I'm really hoping we can get to the bottom of this.”
“Me too.”
I hang up the phone and scroll down to Luca's number, pressing it. My hand trembles as I try to control the anger running through my veins.
“Hello?”
“I need you to be free at ten-thirty tomorrow morning.”
“Is that right? What for exactly?”
“Can you be at my school at that time or not?”
“Depends. What's in it for me? Do I get some big prize when I get there?”
I shake my head in frustration. I'm not in the mood for Luca's games today. “I won't tell Tuck you're secretly in love with him.”
“Psh, please, as if he doesn't already know.”
I laugh. “Please Luca, I need you. This is important. Jamie's jealous ex is trying to get him fired and went to my school today pretending to be you.”
“He did what now? Oh, you best believe I'm there. No bitch gets away with impersonating me.”
“Great, I'll message you the address. Oh, and Luca, please wear clothes you don't dance in and don't flirt with the dean of my school.”
“If I knew there were going to be so many damn rules, I wouldn't have agreed.”
“Yeah, yeah, you know you did it because you love me.”
“I hate how well you know me. You know I got you, boo boo. It's you and me against the damn world, remember?”
“How could I ever forget?”
“Don't worry babe, as long as I'm around, you never will.”
I set my phone down after hanging up with Luca, hoping tomorrow goes the way I want it to. Never did I think something like this could happen. Normally I would tell myself no man is worth all this mess, except Jamie isn't any man.
He's a good person, the sweetest man I know, and he doesn't deserve this. I won't let him lose his job over this, especially if it has something to do with me.
