"It is time for our dance, Lord Langton," Catherine said to Callum and he groaned inwardly.
He was beginning to find Catherine's constant disturbance rather annoying but he smiled politely instead.
"Indeed," he replied, as they both headed for the dance floor.
There, the Duke and his fiancée were presently dancing gracefully across the room. With the way the couple looked at each other, anyone could tell that they were deeply in love with each other. They simply gazed into each other's eyes as though they were not aware of the hundreds of eyes that were watching them.
Soon enough, everyone else joined them on the dance floor.
Callum took Catherine's hands and they began to do a slow waltz.
They danced quietly for a while with Callum hoping that the dance would come to an end soon.
"They are just so adorable together, don't you think?" Catherine finally said, beaming in a direction at Callum's left side.
Callum looked and saw that just some steps away were Felington and Louise dancing. Louise was presently looking up at Felington with a beautiful smile on her face. She seemed to be enjoying his presence and attention. Callum's heart caught in his chest as he watched Felington hold her to himself.
"What do you think, Lord Langton?" Catherine asked.
"I suppose they are well suited, especially Lady Louise. Louise looks especially pretty this evening," Callum said, without even pausing to think.
"Louise?" Catherine repeated, frowning even as Callum twirled her and she landed in his arms yet again.
"Were you not pointing out Felington and Lady Louise?" He asked.
Catherine pursed her lips. "No, I was not talking about Louise. I was simply talking about the Duke and his fiancée."
"Is that so?" Callum asked, "I had no idea."
This time, Catherine did not respond and they continued to dance in silence.
Callum, however, could not stop his eyes from wandering toward Louise time and time again. The more he saw Louise smile at Felington, the angrier he became. This, inevitably, affected his dances, and on more occasions than one, he found himself stepping on Catherine's feet or even totally taking a wrong step which ended up in him colliding with her.
Soon enough, he could no longer ignore Catherine's angry demeanor and her scathing looks. "You could have simply decided to dance with Louise instead of me," Catherine finally said.
Callum sighed. "What are you saying?"
"I suppose the eyes would only see what it wants to see," Catherine said, "even when I pointed out your grandfather and his fiancée to you, you could only see Louise."
Seeing that Catherine was upset, Callum tried to defuse the situation. "Lady Catherine, I..."
"Why then did you sign my card if you knew that the person you really wanted to dance with is Louise," she cut in, "why did you make me think you wanted to be with me when you only have eyes for Louise."
"What?" Callum was taken aback, "I do not think I have ever told you that I have eyes for you," he quickly retorted.
"Then what is it that Lord Felington always told me about how you wanted me?" She asked.
Callum raised his eyebrow. "I suppose that is Felington's attempt at matchmaking us. I have never told him that I wanted to be with you."
"Is that so?" Catherine asked, looking crestfallen.
Tears brimmed in her eyes and Callum could not help but feel sorry for the poor girl.
"What I do not understand, though, is the fact that I was told that you courting Louise was simply a ruse and yet, you seem to be enamored by her," Catherine said.
"Whatever is between me and Louise is not anyone's business," Callum said strictly.
"Oh, I know what this is," Catherine said, and then laughed.
