“That’s fine. I’m just glad you’re not living off a trust fund so you can make beer in your bedroom. That was true of a guy I went out with last week.”
“Where do you find these guys?”
Paige shrugged. “Tinder.”
“Oof. Well, I mean, I’m game for whatever you are. Just know that if I don’t call next week, it’s because I have died after the pile of paper on my desk at work finally tipped over and killed me.”
“I’m kind of just rolling with things here. Let’s not talk about it too much.”
Josh laughed, delighted. “Okay, then. Let’s get out of here.”
Chapter 4
Josh’s buildingwaspretty spectacular. A doorman sat at a marble counter in the cavernous lobby; Josh waved at him as he took Paige’s elbow and steered her toward the elevator bank. There were eight elevators in all.
“How many floors does this place have?”
“Thirty-six, although the third floor is the gym and the pool and the top floor is a lounge, so there aren’t any apartments on either of those. And there’s laundry and storage in the basement.”
“Wow. There’s a pool?”
“Now it feels like I’m showing off. Am I showing off?”
“You’re making me wonder about your salary at the corporate shill firm.”
Josh chuckled. “I got a good deal because the developer is a client at my law firm. And I promise you will be less impressed when you see my actual apartment.”
Paige smiled. “I moved a couple of years ago into a new building on Pacific that is really nice. But we only have a doorman on weekdays and the ‘gym’ is two treadmills in a tiny dark room in the basement. I can’t get over that this building has a pool. I’m so jealous.”
“Please understand that I’m selling my soul for it. I read a brief today about a client who I’m pretty sure belongs in jail. White-collar crime, though, so they’ll send him to Danbury and he’ll be out in six months, but still.” He sighed. “You don’t want to have sex with me anymore, do you?”
“Promise to keep volunteering and donate some of your exorbitant salary to charity and sex is still on the table.”
“That’s generous of you.”
Paige grinned. The elevator was taking its sweet time, so she took advantage of the opportunity to look at Josh now that they were actually under good lighting. He had surprisingly long eyelashes for a guy, and they drew Paige’s gaze right to his eyes. He smiled at her, and those eyes sparkled. He shot her a little half-smile and rocked on his heels.
“It just occurred to me that we’ve only seen each other in the dark,” he said. “And, well, gosh, you’re pretty.”
Paige smiled at him. “Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself.”
She leaned against the wall next to the elevator. Josh stepped closer and put one hand near her head. He stared at her for a long moment and then met her gaze. He lowered his eyelids.
Paige’s heart sped up as she sensed that he was about to kiss her. She lifted her chin and rose on her toes to get closer to his face. He smiled faintly and then closed the distance between them, his lips gently pressing against hers.
She hooked a hand behind his head and pulled him a little closer to deepen the kiss. He sighed and rested against her, and it was like they might melt together from the heat of this simple kiss.
Then the elevator dinged.
“We’ll get the next one,” Josh mumbled against Paige’s lips. He flailed a bit but managed to press the elevator button as the one next to them closed.
Paige giggled and kissed him again.
Josh pulled back slightly. “Probably making out in the elevator bay is not thebestidea.”
“I hope that next elevator gets here quickly.” Paige shot Josh what she hoped was a meaningful look.
He returned her heated gaze. “Let me see if I can work my magic.” He pressed the button again.
