“Not yet.” Kerrielynn was looking at her phone. “It looks like they post the day after. If something were to happen today, it’d be up tomorrow.”
“You’re really on this, aren’t you?” Everett smiled at the girl. The sheriff and Everett had only recently picked up on that. As long as these yahoos stayed on schedule, there’d be a new post showing the damage done to Rose Prairie.
“That’s why we’re calling her Miss Sherlock now.” Benji chuckled.
“Without the hat.” Oren cocked his head to one side. “Or the pipe. He smoked a pipe, didn’t he?”
Benji shrugged. “I like the way a pipe smells.”
“Yuck.” Halley wrinkled up her nose. “No way.”
“Anyway.” Leif hugged Kerrielynn. “If something comes up, Kerrielynn will probably be the first to know.”
“Yeah.” Kerrielynn blushed. “It’s just... These guys—girls—people are destroying stuff.Andthey’re trying to get, like, famous by doing something bad. It...it makes mesomad.”
Leif smiled at her. “You’re cute when you’re mad.”
Her cheeks went a darker red as she leaned into the hand he pressed against her cheek.
“Ugh,” Benji groaned.
“Right? I’m getting food.” Oren stood. “Come on.” Benji followed him to the snacks.
“Try the brownies.” Halley trailed behind them. “They’re Aunt Camellia’s recipe.”
“They’re mine.” Benji cut around Oren and sprinted for the table.
“Isn’t there anything else we can do?” Kerrielynn asked, taking Leif’s hand in hers.
Everett shook his head. “With any luck, they’ll get cocky and make mistakes.” His hands were tied, and he hated it. He had absolutely no control here—no way to get a handle on it. His frustration returned with a vengeance.
“Okay.” Kerrielynn didn’t look any happier about it than he was. “We’ll keep our ears and eyes open.”
Leif lightly tugged at her hand. “We need to check the sign-up sheets before everyone starts leaving.”
“Right.” She nodded and dragged him along behind her.
Dane sighed, giving him a hard look. “This whole thing sucks.”
“Yep.” Everett couldn’t have said it better himself.
“Anything new?” His voice was low. “You look a little...”
“Tense? Yeah, well, I am.” His gaze locked with Dane’s. “Rose Prairie got...paintballed last night.”
“Damn,” Dane hissed, studying him. “You eat yet?”
“A brownie. A cupcake. They were pretty good.” He’d planned on grabbing a couple more for his dinner before he headed home.
“Let’s go. Lemme just tell Tans real quick.” He headed to the snack table.
Everett found himself watching Rosebud. Like it or not, he liked that she was home. He liked seeing her. He smiled—right about the time she looked his way. She held his gaze, but her smile seemed...strained.
What the hell?Something was going on. But what?
“Let’s go.” Dane grabbed his arm. “Before you pass out.”
He was bone-tired, but he’d like to find out what was going on with Rosebud first. When he looked back, she was nowhere to be found.Great. Just great.Another mystery he’d have to figure out.
