“What do you think, did Genevieve do it?” she asks.
“It doesn’t matter what I think.”
“Well, I hope she gets put away for this. Harrison didn’t deserve to die. He was a kind man, a gentle heart, he wouldn’t hurt anyone, and he got this horrible death by someone he thought loved him.” She shakes her head and dabs at non-existent tears.
Need to find out why Harrison split with the ex. Something about her ain’t settling right.
“What I plan to prove.” I follow her toward the kitchen. “Whether she did it.” Then ask, because I’m curious about her take on it, “Do you know if they had any problems?”
She walks around casually, seemingly looking at nothing. “Not that I know of, but I haven’t spoken to Harrison in a while. The girls spoke to him every day. They so shocked by this. That Genevieve could do such a thing.”
If they think Genevieve did it, would explain why they haven’t reached out to her.
Sarah turns around to face me. “Would I be able to look around?”
I shake my head. “House is still a crime scene. Shouldn’t be here now.”
“But you’re here,” she says. “And I don’t see a badge.”
“Got the judge’s permission right here.” I pull a random piece of paper from the inside pocket of my leather jacket to flash at her. She doesn’t need to know I’m helping Genevieve and am only able to be here ‘cause my buddy called in a favor. She stands up straight annoyed with my reply, but there is no way I’m letting her walk around the house alone. Especially now that I’ve found the safe room. Can’t trust she won’t do something with the videos or the cameras.
“And have you found anything?” She’s not afraid to ask her questions. And doesn’t appear to be in a rush to leave either.
“Found out Harrison had a safe room with surveillance on—” I stop when I see her body react to my words. Her shoulders tense and she starts shifting her weight from foot to foot. Doesn’t look like she realizes she does it. Something on them she doesn’t want me to see. “Can’t get into them all just yet.”
Her body relaxes. She’s nervous about something on those tapes.
Is the murder on the videos? Or was it something else? Harrison having an affair with his ex?
“I’m sure there is nothing on there, except maybe proof that Genevieve is guilty. Why aren’t you questioning her?”
I can’t help but smile and shake my head. One of those rich people who think they can get their way easily.
“I have. Probably will again. did. Have your daughters been to talk to them yet?”
“I don’t know why they would need to. They weren’t at the house when it happened. Besides, they are so upset they can’t talk to anyone. One mention of their dad, they start crying.” She looks around the house once more. “I best get going, do you know when the house will be open for me to come?”
“Ask the police.” I walk over to the door with her to make sure she leaves. Bitch is hiding something—whatever it is, I hope it’s on tape.
After I’m sure she’s gone, I grab my bike and head out to Martin’s. Need him to figure out how we can work the safe room videos into the case legally, if at all, once Al hacks them. There’s got to be proof on them, I just know it. But, I don’t want to have that conversation with him over the phone.
On my way there, I call Genevieve.
“Hey,” she answers, her voice soft.
“You okay?” I ask.
“I’m good.”
“Just wanted to call with an update. You know Harrison had a safe room at the house with surveillance?”
“What? No! Oh god, Tyler, what if it shows I did it, I don’t think—”
“Genevieve, not why I’m asking. Stay focused.”
She sniffles. “Okay.”
“Guessing you don’t know the PIN to access the videos then?”
