Her focus on him, Eve missed the flying acrobatics altogether. “Adam! You promised you wouldn’t stop me.”
He turned his head, and their eyes locked. “I’m not stopping you, but I never said anything about letting you go alone.” If she thought he’d allow her to walk into a police station without him, she’d misunderstood him when he’d said sex between them changed things.
She hadn’t given him any more details on what went down with the Matthews, but at this point, he didn’t give a shit. “Doc will have a look at your stitches to make sure everything’s good. Then I’ll drive you into town, and we’ll talk to the police together.”
“Adam—”
“It’s not up for debate.”
“But—” Protest cut short by the passenger door popping open, she shook her head and accepted the hand being offered. “I’m not an invalid, Davis.”
“It’s slippery,” he replied, shooting Adam a nervous glance.
“Aw! You have a dog,” Eve said, sliding off the seat in a hurry. “What’s his name?”
“Jeff.”
“Jeff? What kind of a—” Lost in the sound of truck doors slamming, her question made Adam grin, and he found himself hurrying around the front bumper to see the expression on her face when she found out the name of Jeff’s owner.
“You’re kidding me!” Arms around the dog’s thick neck, she looked up from her crouched position. “Mutt and Jeff?”
Oh yeah, worth the hustle. Joy radiated from her as she planted a smooch to the top of Jeff’s square-shaped head. Fuck, Adam would give her a puppy a day just to keep her this happy.
Davis bobbed his chin up and down. “Yeah. Mutt’s not here right now, so Jeff kinda follows me around.”
“Kind of?” Adam offered Eve his hand and hauled her to her feet. “That dog is stuck to your leg like superglue on skin.”
As if to make his point, Jeff joined the group as they made their way to the front porch where Grant waited for them outside, hands in his pockets, expression carefully schooled. “Hey, Eve. Doc’s ready for you.” He gave her an encouraging smile before continuing. “I need to borrow Adam for a few minutes. Davis will show you the way to Jamie’s office if that’s okay?”
“Yes, of course,” she replied before stabbing Adam with a sharp gaze. “We’re not done.”
“Agreed.”
Eve meant they weren’t done arguing.
He meant they weren’t done period.
She knew the difference and rolled her eyes. “Do me a favor.” She turned her attention to Grant but hitched her thumb at Adam’s chest. “If the militant meddler tries to leave without me, shoot him.”
Grant patted his Glock and gave her a nod. “You got it, boss.”
“Thanks.” She grinned, and Adam didn’t appreciate the two of them plotting against him.
“If you’re done issuing orders to my men, I suggest you move your butt inside before I do it for you.”
Spine turning into carbon metal, her shoulders went back, and she huffed. “Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”
“If I recall correctly, I woke up on the same side as you.” His finger twitched twice, and he had to fight the urge to plant his palm on her ass as a reminder of the night they shared. “The sooner Doc checks you over, the sooner we leave.”
Her cheeks flushed pink, and he fucking loved the color on her. “There is nowe, Adam.”
“Oh, there’s all kinds ofwe, Eve.” He cocked a brow at the stubborn woman, daring her to disagree.
“Fine.” She poked him in the chest with a bionic finger. “Be ready to go in thirty minutes, Mr. Bossy Pants, or I leave without you.” She crossed the threshold and had gone halfway down the main hall before she turned back. “Are you coming, Davis?”
About ready to swallow his tongue in shock, he looked from Eve to Adam and back again. The three-hundred-watt smile she aimed his way went a long way to reassure the nervous teen, and he hustled to her side, Jeff in tow.
She looped her arm through his, and the grin he shot back at Adam before the three of them disappeared into the kitchen to access the back stairs made his chest tighten. They were good together, bonding like brother and sister.
