Silas nodded. “I’ll be back…” he peered at me. “And we will finish our discussion.” He shot Roland a glare before exiting with Hendry.
Roland and I just stayed in silence for a moment.
“Thanks, Lena,” he said with a half-smile, “Silas would’ve had my balls for showing kindness, though I may not be out of the woods just yet.” He ran a hand through his finger-length brown hair that was kept short at the neckline, looking at the now-closed door.
“Do you show this kindness to all of the prisoners?” I muttered as I stood, eyeing the food on the desk, my stomach rumbling at the smell of it. It had been days since I last ate.
He smirked. “No need to get jealous, Ginger Snap. My kindness only applies to you.”
I crossed my arms and walked over to him, looking at him in disbelief. When I got in front of him, I realized I didn’t even know what to say.
“I amnotjealous.”
He leaned in close, and my breathing stuttered. I felt his breath on my neck, spreading chills and that stupid heat across my body once more.
“I have a feeling Icouldmake you jealous if I tried,” he whispered in my ear as his hand lightly grazed my arm. I flinched, but I didn’t push him away.
“You are delusional,” I breathed.
He let out a low laugh, his breath grazing my ear, and my eyes fluttered shut. When he finally pulled away, my lids opened to find him gazing down at me.
What is with this guy?
“Enjoy your food,” he said quietly with a soft smile, then headed for the door.
Chapter Forty-Four
Mymealwasamazing. The chicken I was given was surprisingly tender, and the rice and vegetables on the side had been seasoned nicely. Considering everything I had eaten up until this point had been bland and super spaced apart, I was especially grateful for Roland's act of kindness.
As I was finishing up with the last bites, Silas came back, shutting the door quietly behind him.
“We will leave in the night,” he said quietly as he approached.
I raised a brow. “We?”
“Yes, we.” He exhaled through his nose. “My betrayal would be found out at some point, and if not me, other innocent men would be the ones to suffer for it. It will be myself, Edmund, Hendry, and my wife who will join you.”
I blinked. Over and over.
“They’re all on board with this?” I asked skeptically.
He nodded.
”And what, you just plan on living with my people and pretending like you aren’t the Prince of Otacia?”
“No. I plan on helping you accomplish what you are meant to.”
“What, saving all of Magekind?” I replied humorlessly.
Instantly, my stomach dropped when my words registered.
“It will be Silas who determines the fate of Magekind. It has been seen.”
Torrin's words from all those years ago…could this be what Igon saw?
Silas didn't respond to my comment. “I will need you to make a distraction. One you have done before,” Silas continued, and when I frowned, he said, “A fire.”
Silas told me the entire plan. When night fell, I would be the first uncuffed. I would go to the Western Wing and start multiple fires, the last creating a wall to block the soldiers from stopping our escape out of the Eastern Wing. Silas would be with me while Hendry ushered out my people.
