“Kinda like me today,” she said softly. I wanted to argue with her. It had been the wrong time, but fuck, I couldn’t stop thinking about how small the world was.
Less than twelve hours ago, I didn’t even know she existed. I didn’t know my princess was out in the world, walking around and existing, yet I couldn’t imagine life without her now.
“You’re here.” I winked gently before setting the comb on the counter and caressing the side of her face. “All beautiful.” She blushed when I pulled my shirt up and over my head, tossing it into the hamper in my bathroom before picking her up and directly heading towards my bed.
“Logan––“
“Shh… breathe,” I cut in.
“Honey, this is your room.“I love hearing her call me honey. “You’ve done so much and?—“
“I want you to sit and watch something.” I handed her the TV remote. “I’m gonna change and get you some clothes.”
“Thank you, Logan,” she thanked me, but it was me who was dying to thank her for letting me help her. I had a feeling she didn’t let too many people help her out.
Once I got dressed and grabbed a change of clothes and helped her get dressed, the food I’d ordered on the way home from the hospital arrived. I served us food, and we sat on my bed and watched some old TV sitcom she’d mentioned she used to watch when she was younger. I rebandaged the cut over her eye, and she took her meds even though she tried to fight me on the pain pills.
I got up, and by the time I brought us glasses of water, she was asleep on my bed. She looked so damn beautiful and perfect in my bed. I sat on the recliner I kept in my room. I wanted to liedown with her, but I didn’t want to overstep any more. I watched game after game on TV, and just as my eyes were growing heavy, I heard her whimper. I sat up, but before I could get to her, she cried out.
“Baby.” I kneeled in front of her, trying to be careful not to shake her too hard, but she wouldn’t wake up.
“No,” she whimpered. “I don’t wanna die.” Her words were sleepy but filled with fear. It gripped my throat. “No, please.”
“Shit,” I cursed under my breath. Then I picked up her body, lay down in bed, and held her to me. “Shhh… you’re okay, princess. You’re okay,” I soothed and felt when she came awake. Her hands clenched the material of my tee.
“Logan.” Her eyes connected with mine, and I hated the fear I could still see in her gaze. Like she remembered every detail. She blinked it away, and I knew she was seeing me.
“There’s my girl.” Her fingers clenched the material of my shirt tighter.
“You didn’t get electrocuted.” Her bewildered gaze looked at me. I couldn’t imagine what she must have been dreaming about. “You ran towards me and the wires?—“
“Nothing happened to me,” I reassured her. I hated cutting her off, but there was no need for her to relive the nightmare.
“It was a dream?” Those big beautiful brown eyes started to get glassy, so I pulled her into me. Holding her tightly.
“A bad one.” I nodded, pulling her up over me. I loved how despite just having just met, something inside her trusted me. Her body recognized me. It knew she was safe with me. Today. Tomorrow. Always.
“It was so real,” she whispered against my neck.
“But it wasn’t. This is real. I got you. It’s okay. You’re okay. Everything is going to be okay,” I promised.
“Don’t let go, Logan. Please,” she whispered. As if I could. Not that I wanted to, but especially not when her body still trembled.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I vowed, pressing my lips to her forehead. Meaning the words like a solemn swear.
As if the nightmare clung to her, her pretty fingers kept clenching the front of my shirt. Almost as if she needed to know I was still with her. Even as her body slowly melted into mine, pressing her body weight completely against me, and her breathing shallowed, Vi didn’t let go. And I was more than okay with that. She could hold on to me for a lifetime if she needed to. I’d fucking love it.
FIVE
VIOLET
I wasin that weird place between sleep and a dream.
An ugly one.
I was back in my car, and I kept seeing sparks flying outside. But even through the high voltage lights, I saw him. Logan. Standing just out of reach.
“I got you.”I felt the words before I heard them. And just like that, my heart that was ready to jump out of my rib cage started to calm down. It didn’t hurt that two warm muscular bands wrapped around me. Changing the direction of my dream.
